Read on another Forum about Nosler partition failures on Buff.
Anyone aware of any reports of problems with penetration failures on Buff with broadside shots with Swift A-frames hitting shoulders or bone?? How about penetration on Texas shots going directly away when a solid is prefered?
How about Woodleigh softs on shoulders and going away lengthwise shots? Not recommended but I am curious as to their effectiveness and performance.
The rifle is the launch vehicle but the bullet does the work.
What is the forums experience with premium softnose bullet limitations on large DG?
Thank you for all comments beforehand!!

Hoppdoc,
I can understand a Nosler falling apart, as the lead isn't bonded to the copper. But I don't recall hearing many (or any?) failure stories on buffalo with modern high-end bonded bullets such as A-frames, Woodleighs or North Forks. So I'm sure you'd be safe with any of the above three. There's also Trophy Bonded, and Rhino bullets to consider if you wish. Personally, I've been impressed with what I've heard from people using North Fork bullets, and have used them on Moose here at home successfully. I'd use them on buff too without hesitation.

Woodleigh and A Frames are fine. Can't comment on others as haven't tested them.
Re "How about Woodleigh softs on shoulders and going away lengthwise shots? Not recommended but I am curious as to their effectiveness and performance."
In general fine - however you need to take into account a whole range of factors - Bullet Poiint Shape - Round nose or Protected Point, SD's, Velocity, what it hits on entry, weight of bullet, what the bullet hits on entry and as going through etc etc. All have a big bearing on how much it expands and this to an extent on how far it will penetrate. I have never had a problem.

I have not used the Swift A Frames on DG however I have shot 15 head of plans game with the 300 grain 9.3 A Frame from Springboc to Eland and could not ask for better performance. As for the Rhino bullets, one of my customers has had dismal bullet failure with their 286 grain bullet in 9.3. He was pushing them at around 3100 fps and the hole front half blew off.

Like Erik, I haven't heard of any reports of modern super premium bullets failing. I just got a bunch of North Forks in for an upcoming Buffalo Safari (in 375 and 338). Will post about their performance when I get back.

Good god - 3100fps - I am asumming he is using a 9.3x62 or 9.3x64 and not some super round but would you please explain how your friend gets a 286gn going at 3100fps. All my experiecne with these 2 calibres doesn't get anywhere near there.
286 grain bullet in 9.3. He was pushing them at around 3100 fps and the hole front half blew off.
No wonder.
I think he may have been pushing them a bit faster than they needed or were design to go.
Unless they are like Barnes which don't have recommended impact velocities.

I have loaded the 286 gr SAF for a friends 9.3 (double). That load has taken several buffalo and other plains game with no problems.
I have used the 500 gr woodleigh softs and solids in my 458 Lott on buffalo with no problems.
I have used the 300 gr barnes x (and triple shock which shoots better) in my 375 HH on buffalo with no problems.
There are too many good bullets out there to waste time worring whether a certain bullet might be good enough.
I have even used the 235 gr barnes xlc in my 375 hh on buffalo with excellent results. Would not recomend this bullet weight as first choice but it did work very well. This load is chronographed at 2900 fps.

The 9.3 cartridge I am talking about is the .366DGW which is a direct neck down of the .416 Rigby. I found I could push those 300 grain Swift A Frames at 2900 FPS with this cartridge at a pressure level of 49400 CUP and that is substancially faster then Swift intended them to go. I only recovered three bullets Two of those recovered were from Gemsboks and they weightd 292 and 295 grains. The third bullet was a finishing shot on a Zebra. This bullet went through about 4 feet of Zebra and a foot or so of sand and it still weighed in at 275 grains. I do not think one can go wrong using the A Frames.

Thanks, that explains it.
A 366 / 9.3 version of the 338 Lapua by the sounds of it.
Thanks

No the Lapua is shortened and is not nearly the same case capisity. The .366 DGW will push a 250 grain bullet at 3253 FPS a 286 grain slug at 3125 and the 300 grain bullets at 2900 FPS. If you were to sight in a .366 DGW with the 250 grain Nosler bullet 2.4" high at 100 yards you would be right on at 275 yards and have 2733 FPS for velosity and 4146 FPE, at 500 yards you will be down 24.55" and have 2349 for velosity and 3064 for energy, this is well above the .338 Lapua.
