Oryx kills American
STAFF REPORTER

An American visitor to Namibia died at a farm in the Gobabis area after he was gored by an oryx on Thursday.

The gemsbok attacked the 65-year-old American between 08h00 and 09h00 on Thursday, the Namibian Police reported on Friday.

A Police spokesperson, Sergeant Stephan Nuuyi, added yesterday that it was reported that the man had set out on a walk with the aim to take some photographs earlier that morning.

He apparently encountered the gemsbok, got too close to the animal, and was attacked and killed.

The incident happened at farm Avitra along the Gobabis-Nina road, the Police reported.

It's really a shame that there are so many people that insist on invading an animal's comfort zone, and end up getting injured or killed. You would think that after Steve Irwin got killed, that they'd wake up, and smell the danger. Crikey!

My first thought was OUCH !

I have always been warned when shooting horned or antlered animals to make sure they are dead - and I have been told that Oryx and other African animals are the worst.

But to be charged and killed, well .......

Farm's animals are more or less tame. They don't fear much the humans. This could explain why the Oryx let the poor guy get this close and then kill him.
I guess it happened in a Photosafari or Vision farm. In a hunting area, usually the game is more circonspect and this Oryx would have scramed long before the guy would have seen it.
Could this stupid death be a lesson. But usually protectionnists are ...................................deaf.
