Lancaster oval bore 303
      #62333 - 10/09/06 11:48 AM

Hello,
I finally slugged my Lancaster 303 oval bore and it mics at 0.300/0.317 on both left and right.
Which bullet diameter would you guys use?
I assume that a soft 311 bullet would upset just fine in the bore, but...
Curl, what's the story on your 280?
BTW, the bores appear to be mint. However, it would be hard to see wear on that type of rifling.
Thanks for the help...
WC

WC:
As you suspect, conventional .311 projectiles should shoot just fine in an oval-bore Lancaster .303. Bear in mind that, unless re-regulated, it will probably require a 215gr round-nose bullets for regulation.

Wildcattle

You should still be able to see the Oval Bore on a Lancaster gun.

You just need to get the light reflecting down the barrel correctly.

500Nitro,
I can see the smooth rifling allright. By mint, I meant that there is no visible frosting or corrosion. However, it is a lot harder to assess the wear, as there is no sharp edge rounding that you can base your assessment on.
The gun is approx. from 1899 (SN 08456) so it is likely to use the 215grs bullet.
I don't see any evidence of reregulation.
On another subject I have been trying to get a hold of David Perkins who is supposed to have the CL records, but to no avail. Has anybody been successful in contacting him?
Thanks a lot,
WC

Sounds like a wonderful little double. I would say that there would be very little wear, given that both mic the same and all. I keep hoping to find a Lancaster dirt cheap that someone just thinks is a shotgun. I have fired a 500x3" oval bore double several times and they are a real treat.

It was a pretty nice find indeed (Many thanks to google!): all original, ejectors, long LOP, and nicely cased with a bunch of goodies (including 4 spare front sights).
08456 was built on the self-opener Beesley boxlock action.
The Lancasters have a very unique style for shape and engraving.
The dealer did not know what to make of it.
As a matter of fact. it is amazing how many dealers don't know the slightest thing about DRs and just stick random prices an them when they get one.
Anyway, I just need to make it shoot now.
