Favorite double rifle action/configuration?
      #61486 - 21/08/06 04:55 AM

All these posts on the Screw grip and the Jones underlever got me thinking.

What is your favorite double rifle action and configuration and why?

In terms of elegance and beauty I have to go with a 1880-1900 back action, hammered, Jones underlever in 450 or 500BPE (or hell a 577!!). There is something classic, and very Victorian about these rifles. They are perhaps what most comes to my mind when I think double rifles. I'm going to own one one day... Though I am aware of the limitations of a hammered underlever, I still love them.

In terms of practicality I enjoy a boxlock, non-ejector in a medium calibre that is well scoped. I know my Chapuis is not the nicest gun, but she has served me well from Alaska, to Virginia, to France, and now to Hawaii.

Chasseur I have had all kinds, and I find good and bad in all of them. Though I like O/Us, my favorite is the S/S double rifle. However there are several reasons I like different types of S/S double rifles! For example, for pure beauty of line, I like the old back action hammer rifles with Damascus barrels, and very light scroll engraveing, and stocked with AAAAA Cercasion Walnut. The rifles made for show, if done properly are beautiful, as well as costly, and look very nice in their fitted Oak & leather luggage cases with all the tools.

My useing rifle will always be a S/S double with a box lock action, with or without ejectors, hammerless, chambered for a rimmed cartridge, of the NE designation, and low pressure, with heavy for caliber bullets in regulation. The chambering range being between 22 Hornet and 500NE.

I like the Box lock with side plates, for strength! With this action, very little wood is removed from the very critical wrist area of the stock, and the plates re-enforce this area, as well.
Of all the double rifles I have ever seen with their stocks broken enough to put them out of service, the break was in the wrist area of the stock, and every one was a side lock!
Some side locks are stronger than others. the side lock, barr action, is far stronger that the back action side lock. But IMO, the box lock with side plates is the best of both worlds, for durability, and it gives up nothing for looks either.

Boxlock, with side plates, hammerless, with or without ejectors, with a QD scope attchment in chamberings up to the 400s, and with good wide V, with flip-ups and a flip-up moon, pistol grip stock, from 450 to 500NE.

The BPE jones back action hammer guns are also my favorites.
I like them without scope mounts.

Thanks for the replies guys! Great looking rifles there.

DB: Yeah that calibre range is real nice. I find your comments interesting on sideplates reinforcing an action (somewhat like those Selous plates then?). I had always heard that in many cases they weaken the stock by removing wood. But does that depend on how they made?

Tinker thats a real nice looking rifle there!! Wow!! That gets my vote. Agreed on the no scopes on hammer guns. As much as I like shooting with a scope, they just look WRONG on a hammer gun...

Curly simply beautiful... Words fail... But would you prefer that to a DMB?

I tried to use the search function without success to research different types of boxlock actions made by various
manufacturors without success.

Any suggestions on reviewing the pros and cons of boxlock actions or are they all equal between, Merkel, Heym, Chapuis,Searcy and other makers of DRs??

If it were me I would prefer an Anson & Deeley BL.

I like an Anson & Deeley, but there's nothing like a really good sidelock ejector, whether on the H&H pattern or the Beesley pattern. The hammerless SLE is the epitome, IMHO. Take it if you will. I love hammer guns, and everyother type of DR. Again, to bow and scrape to Mickey, I must say that the .369 Purdey he sold is the DR to die for. I don't own one and may never own one. JMHO. Fortunately Mickey is away at the moment or he would blush.

That's not to say I'm hurting. I have a few decent SLE DR's and some nice A&D DR's too. This hobby doesn't let a man feel content. The grass is always greener on the other side. The best DR is the one I don't yet own. Yadda, yadda, yadda . . .

Is the scottish round action exclusive to McKay rifles?

Is this the strongest and best Double action? Does it matter?

The answer is "no." Here's a composite photo of a James MacNaughton round action double rifle recently offered by Griffin & Howe.

This rifle is a contemporary build chambered for .300 H&H Flanged.

And here's a pre-WW2 MacNaughton in .303 British sold by Sotheby's last August.

This is an antique MacNaughton .303 currently offered by Schwandt Classic Arms.

Finally, here's a look at the David McKay Brown .470NE that went to market a couple years ago.

Just a medley of Scottish round action rifles. Get out the single malt. . .
