Valuable lesson for a newbie to doubles.
      #61338 - 18/08/06 06:21 AM

Over the years of shooting I have taught myself how to shoulder a rifle and acquire a target; until recently this has been done on scoped rifles for the most part. Habbit has engraned that action farely well; this has served me very well until recently.... I have had to reevaluate how I hold a rifle, or at least a double, due to nearly busting my cheek and nose due to recoil. I learned, the hard way, that I have been choking up on the stock too much; its almost like I am trying to get the full view on a zoomed scope. I took multiple shots to the nose shooting this way, and realized I need to keep my face to the back of the stock. I know, your thinking this guy is not the brightest crayon in the box... But if this can help anyone else before they bust their nose or worse well I am willing to be the brunt of a few jokes. Now if I can just figure out how to keep my middle finger from smashing against the trigger guard I'll be great.

It sounds like your stock is too short. A short stock will cause both problems you complain of.

hucksluck,

Re: "Now if I can just figure out how to keep my middle finger from smashing against the trigger guard I'll be great:"

Buy a rubber grommet or whatever they are called from
Galazan's or one of the Shotgun retailers and place
it at the back of the trigger guard as designed.

I have also found my finger gets whacked if the stock is too short.

Lengthen the stock with a good Rubber Slip on Pad and see if that makes a difference.

Good luck an dwell done for posting.

Try a Galco leather slip on pad.

I agree that its likely that the stock is too short.

IMO, a double rifle should fit like your shotgun and not your scoped bolt rifles. I prefer a 15" stock for my DR and my shotguns, 14 5/8" is just right for a scoped rifle, so, if the length of your DR stock is that of your bolt rifles, try adding about a half inch with the rubber slip on or the Galco. Different pads add differing amounts of length.

Try a Limbsaver slip on pad - they come in 1/2" and 1"
so you have a choice and they also cut down on th recoil
you feel.

You can use a bandaid on the finger that's getting wacked . When mounting the gun try NOT bringing your face DOWN to the stock, but hold your head up and bring the stock up to to your cheek. This assumes the butt will mount to your shoulder properly.

Maybe your scopes have been mounted too far forward all along?
