NitroX's southern African odyssey!
      #61170 - 15/08/06 04:55 AM

I received an SMS message on my cellphone from NitroX the other day, and also had a short talk with him on the phone. He had landed safely in J.burg, and was prepairing to leave onwards for Namibia the next morning.

Today, I got a new SMS message, where he informed me that he is now on his second day in Namibia, and that today was his first day of hunting. This was in the Kalahari. The results were a nice springbok in the morning, and a nice gemsbok in the afternoon!

I'll post again when I hear more from him next time from his month long journey thru several southern African countries.

Erik

Looks like things are off to a great start!

Any info on what rifles he took?

The newest update:

Another gemsbok and springbok for NitroX today.

And it seems that he shot a bush yesterday. I don't know if the bush was charging them or not, but I'm guessing it was a rabid one that had to be put down for the sake of public safety.

Tommorow he'll be moving on from the Kalahari back to near Windhoek.

Erik

(Ps. I know he's brought his 450NE doublerifle, but I've sent a message asking him what else he's brought with him. Or if he's borrowing smaller rifles)

He's been using Karls famous(?) 8x68S since longer shots are common in the Kalahari. He also used his Tikka 9,3x74R to finish off his last springbok. It had been first shot with the 8x68S across a gully at about 350 meters while it was facing away. The rest of his animals so far have been shot with the 8x68S.

He also has his 450NE, which will be for elephant

The next few days which will be nearer Windhoek will be for hartebeest, plus whatever comes along.

Keep us posted,

What a long way to rellay news a funny one actually with all the people he knows in Africa. I think we should take him on, on this at the NE braai.

450NE for elephant is that speculation or is he definitely booked for ele that would be super.

He bought an auction hunt for a tuskless elephant. I think he added a buff as well.

NitroX bought his Ele hunt from the Down Under SCI show held at Coffs harbour, NSW, Australia.
No doubt he will give us a full report on all the details of his safari on his return.

The latest news NitroX asked me to post:

3 warthogs today, 2 with the 8x68S, and 1 with his 9,3. Yesterday he shot 2 warthogs with the 8mm. 1 of them was a trophy, and the others have been for leopard bait.

He still has a minimum of 3 warthogs left if he wants, and is able to get them. And he's still trying for a hartebees or two. He's seen a lot, but has been trying to wait for an above average one.

His last hunting day in Namibia will be tommorow.

Which sounds like it's best for the warthogs sake, lest there be none left in the country if he continues like he has so far!

I am glad he's only got 1 day left in Namibia. The rate at which he is taking Warthogs, John might leave the continent depleted of Warthogs

Have fun John, I hope that you get a nice Red Hartebeest.

I've only hunted Hartebeest once, but on that hunt, and on the 4 hunts I've been with friends who were hunting them, we found them to be extremely cautious, wary, critters. They've got excellent eyesight, and a keen sense of smell. They frustrated us so many times that we affectionately refer to them as shitabeests.

NitroX has sent the following:

"Finished Namibia today. Ended up with 2 springbok and 2 gemsbok from the Kalahari near Gochas. Then 1 hartebeest and 7 warthog from near Wondhoek. Tommorow got an early flight from Windhoek to Bulawayo via Jo'burg."

This was yesterday, and he informed me that he'd be leaving Bulawayo after tommorow to head out to the bush for elephant, buffalo etc.

ozhunter
Do you know what camp and what company he is hunting with in the OMAY
Is he shooting a cow elephant or a bull elephant?

I hunted the OMAY in June 2004 and had a great Safari.

I have just spoken to John on the mobile, the reception was very bad and we only shared every 2nd or 3rd word. He is enjoying himself and is having a lot of fun. He will be hunting a tuskless cow, with the possibility of taking another cow or a baffalo.

It was good to hear an Australian acsent again, brings back good memories of a couple of Ausies that hunted with me in 2004, Andrew, Steve and Barnes.

Go get them John

NE450NO2,
NITROX is hunting with a small company that I have enjoyed hunting with also. Hunting will be in Omay North out of Butch's Ume river camp or possibly from the nice new Makenzes point camp.
No doubt he will have a ball .
