Reboring a Ruger RSM in 375H&H to something Bigger
      #61082 - 12/08/06 02:31 PM

To the Group:

Has anyone out there sucessfully made this happen? I have a nice 375H&H and want it in a bigger bore (ie 470 cappstick, 470Mbogo, 500...) Any help would be great.

Thanks

Brad

Why rebore? Something special about the outside of the Ruger Factory Barrel?

Rebarrel, put a new barrel on. Without measuring I can't be sure but the Ruger barrel may not be large enough for reboring as large as you want to go.

By the way, what is a Ruger RSM? I thought the RSM was Winchester thing?

I have to agree, Why Rebore the barrel, For the cost of a new barrel your going to pay far more for the rework, Not to mention finding someone to take that chance of reworking a barrel like that. Its just a though go with a 416 Rigby, But then again I do favor them.

Good luck
Forrest

The Ruger RSM MkII rifle is a classic rifle with the barrel haveing the quarter rib, front sling swivel, and front sight ramp as an intregal part of the barrel steel. This is a feature you pay an extra $1500 for in a custom rifle.

www.ruger.com

Go to the Ruger web-site and click on firarms, then on rifles, then on bolt action, then on 77 MKII, then scroll down to the one listed as MAGNUM, and click on the picture of the rifle. It will take you to the three rifles in that catagory, then click on one of the pictures again, and it will inlarge the picture, and give you all the specs!

The simplest thing in this case is to either keep the 375H&H RSM MKII, and buy the same rifle chambered for 458LOTT, or sell the 375H&H and buy the 458LOTT MK II. Of course if the 500 is what floats his boat, then the re-bore is in order, but the magazine will have to be modified as well, and maybe a change of stock with something like a 505 Gibbs!

EXACTLY!

In this case RSM is Ruger, which stands for
"RUGER SAFARI MAGNUM", and is a rifle designation!

WSM stands for
"Winchester short Magnum", and is a cartridge designation!

................................DUH!!!!!!

Yeah momentary brain fart! Spending to much time with my Martini's. Although the last rifle other than a Martini I shot was a Ruger 77, that was about 4 years ago.

Still don't think reboring is a worth while exercise for anything other than if there is something special about the outside of the barrel or it's the only way to acquire some special bore diameter.

You don't think the barrel with quarter rib, barrel sling ring, and fornt sight ramp, milled from one piece of steel something special about the outside of the RSM barrel?

I'll just say this, if he rebarrels I'll buy the RSM barrel in a heart beat!
