Selling a double to someone in the states???
      #61045 - 11/08/06 06:26 PM

Hi Guys

I'm thinking seriously of offering my Searcy .470 for sale. I suspect that the best market will be in the US. If I were to be successful with a deal what would be the process for getting the rifle to the buyer? ie from Australia to the US?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Cheers.

GG

I'll tell you what..... I will give you 3 times what you paid for your raffle tickets for it and will even fly to Australia to get it . I bet most people don't make 300% of their original investment on a DR and then you wont even have to go through the headache of transferring firearms to the US. Just give me your address and the check will be in the mail!

I stand to be corrected on this as it is a while since I have done it.

After getting paid, you fill out an Dept of Defence export request and they will issue it within about 2 weeks.

The US buyer has to find a dealer who is a registered importer
and a Form 6 is filled out and sent of. Wait 6 wks to 2 months for it to be returned.

When you have a copy the item can be packed up and sent to a freight forwarder for shipment to the US. I would suggest use someone who is used to shipping guns to the US.

Pay freight forwarder and off it goes.

Note - Import duty may be payable by the importer / buyer but since the gun originated in the US this MAY not be the case.

Also, call Butch Searcy and see if he wants it and finally,

Why not try to sell it here ? I get calls all the time asking if any
of my guns are for sale.

Hope this helps. PM me if needed and we can talk over the phone
if you want to call me.

Excluding divorce or terminal disease why would you sell
your 470?

GG375,

It certainly can be done, but it's a bit of a hassle in the US.

About 5 years ago I went through the procedures to have a shotgun from Australia imported to the US. The best thing I did was to hire a dealer familiar with imports to do the details. That cost me about $250 and was money well spent. All I had to do was wait as he did all the work. Then when the gun came he did the transfer to me under the US laws.

One dealer who does this routinely is Charles Schneible of British Sporting, Ltd. of Millbrook, New York. Here's the link to his website:

British Sporting Gun Services

500Nitro may be right. I don't think there is an import duty or tariff on an item that originated in the US, but I can't say that for certain.

Hope this helps.

It is quite simple as 500Nitro explained. You do not need an FFL dealer with an importer's license in the US. Any FFL holder can import rifles and shotguns on an occasional basis. To some it mind boggling but the reality is filling out the forms, that can be downloaded, is easy. It does take up to 2 months to receive them back though.

The buyer can even fill out the forms himself as it is a private sale and skip the FFL holder but sometimes the BATF will not allow this and request a Dealer. I have brought in a couple of shotguns and 2 rifles myself but had another couple sent back. It seems to be based on the knowledge of the person in BATF that you are dealing with.

As for the Aussie end, a form filled out from the Department of War/Defense and a shipping Company that will handle firearms. You can do it from your end but I have found that using a dealer familiar with the process works better and for the money involved is a cheap way to go. I don't know anyone in Queensland but do know a couple around Melbourne.

I would think the market for a Searcy in Aus. would be comparable to the US market as well though.

GG

Remember that while the market in the US will be bigger the number of second hand Searcys available in the US will also be bigger.

Over the years I have sold or either had someone sell for me a wide range of calibres and in general the sales have been both better with respect to speed of sale and value of sale calibres such as big Wbys, 375s etc than it has been for 270s and the like. A lot more people want a 270 than a big Wby or a 375 etc but there is a hell of a lot less of the big bangers to pick from.

Mike

Looking for a good deal on a quality used double in the US is really tough.

I had to look for months, seemed like years, to find a deal on a entry level Merkel. Making a transation via the internet is concerning as well.Kinda like sending $$thousands into the air and trusting you will deal with an honest fella. Maybe thats why most folks buy new Doubles.

I would guess if you are going to spend around 10K+ for a rifle you would spend the $$ for a plane ticket withinin the US to look at it.

From Australia to the US for high $$$? That's gotta be tough.Maybe easier in Australia.

Are Doubles cheaper in Australia?
