I have an idea for a double-thoughts anyone?
      #61016 - 11/08/06 04:59 AM

I've been thinking of building a double chambered for 30-30 Win. I think this would be about the perfect deer rifle here in the eastern US. Besides I think it would just be a neat cartridge to have in a double. Question is, what size action should I use? I was thinking either 20 or 28 ga. Could it even be done on a .410 size action? The 30-30 doesn't kick much at all so as long as it's around 7 pounds (which is about the weight of most lever guns in this chambering) it'll be easy to carry and it'll be light enough in recoil that a kid could shoot it. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Several Continental companies make doubles in 444 Marlin. 30-30 should be possible, I guess, but wouldn't a levergun be much lighter?

I'd say 20 gauge at the largest. The 28 might be alright that really depends on the action itself as there is quite a bit of variation in same size actions among different makers. Never built a 30-30 though have made 2 30-40's on 20 ga frames.

Who makes a double in 444?
A levergun in the same chambering runs about 7 pounds. Most SxS shotguns run in the 7-7-1/2 pound range. I think it would be very possible to keep a double in that chambering around the same weight. Even if it went as high as 8 pounds that would be ok too, though much more than that and I don't think it would be worth it anymore. Besides, most makers chamber for 308 or 30-06 so why not a 30-30?

why not, when there has been drillings and combos and singleshot in the .30-30, so why not a double. a great deer round that has low gas pressures and it is a good one . The .30-40 Krag is also a fine round that suits a double good.

Bloodnativ,

Verney Carron and Zanardini make U/Os in 444 Marlin. There must be others as well. If I remember right, Valmet also offered the 444 as an option on it's double rifles in the past. Frankly, I could not understand why someone would spend so much money on a double in a rifle that would weigh similarly as a lever gun and be only slightly faster on a follow up shot but then someone who can afford it definitely thinks differently from me - my budget cannot.

Double rifles were made by Westley Richards in the 455 pistol chambering for shooting deer etc in the pre war years. Who knows - someone might have commissioned a 30-30 as well. In any case, if that is what you want, go for it.

Anything larger than a 28 gauge is overkill.

My Francotte 9x57R is built on a 28 gauge size frame. It weighs 7 lbs., 6 oz. and is chambered for a cartridge that has a larger head and much more horsepower than the .30-30. Keep it small and light.

Here's my Francotte over on the Double Rifle Archive forum:

Bulldog,

No I haven't hunted with it. I did shoot it in the stalking rifle competition at the Vintagers several years ago. It is like a magic wand.

Thanks for your compliment.

That is something you will have to fix... Or else you can send it to me and I would be happy to chase some blacktails with it this season. But seriously though, she really is a beauty. Any more info besides whats on your site?

A few years ago, someone was making o/u rifles on Ruger Red Label actions. I remember seeing one at Jaeger Guns back in the late '80s in 45-70. Has anyone here had experience with these rifles?
