Single Shot Suggestions

I'm looking for a single shot, big bore. I want something that is a step up from a New England Firearms piece, but I dont want to spend 4 figures either. New or previously loved.

So far I've looked at Ruger #1s, EMF 1874 Sharps reproductions, and Browning High Walls (used). Any other suggestions? Does anyone know how strong the EMF Sharps' are?

I have owned a Ruger Tropical in 375 Holland and love the reproductions although I have never owned one. I think that it would depend on the caliber. If you wanted an 'Old West' caliber than the repros, if yu wanted and African caliber than the Ruger.

as you know, I picked up my Tropical in 375 tonight... haven't fired it yet. I'm a little apprehensive right now! this might hurt!

I think the ruger #1 is your best bet. They are cheap and can be had in 375, 404 (rare), 416, 45-70, 458, etc. and they can pretty easily and cheaply be rechambered for some of the big English calibers:

they are also available in 405 Win... just to add to the alphabet soup!!!

I did finally shoot the #1.... its way cool!

I'm a Pedersoli fan myself, fit and finish are excellent. Can't really say about EMF. As for calibers, I went the 45-70 route for the more versitle reason, as compared to a 45-120. My brass runs on average $165.00 per 500. The 45-120 will run around $3.00 apiece. There is much more loading data available in the smokeless powder also. Another cartridge I've been giving serious thought to in the Sharps is a 50-140. Some might say that 700gr. bullet would be overkill for deer though. Course I hear that anyway, so I guess it don't matter . I generally shoot a 535gr. Postell as it is.

Pretty tough to avoid giving the Ruger #1s a good hard look. Strong, versatile, and custom 'smiths can be found.

I have one in 500 NE and love the beast.

Having said that, a Winchester or Browning Hi Wall in 50-140 would be very cool! 34" barrel with an elevator receiver sight and a globe up front. Combined with a good set of shootin' stix, such an arm would be a hoot

Let us know what you decide. That will give us a chance to cheer and jeer!

The Ruger No.1 really is an excellent rifle. I've had several in the past and still have two. They both get a tremendous amount of use for hunting here in Alaska.

I know you don't want to go past the $1,000 mark, but I have to make a comment on the Martini-Hagn singleshot. Most folks know them as the Hagn. I picked up a few at the ACGG show that Martini-Hagn had on display. I have never picked up a rifle that felt so "alive" in my hands. These rifles really have soul. So much so, that I working on the details for the one I'm ordering!

I love my Ruger No.1's, but these Hagn's are really something else. Ralf Martini is an outstanding person also. Even though I was a nobody, he took quite a bit of his time to introduce me to the other members of the Guild and explain the finer points of the Hagn action.

A single shot afficionado can never be categorised as a nobody!

Ralf sounds like a hell of a guy. It's nice to buy a rifle from a maker that cares and takes the time to interact with his supporters. He is obviously someone who loves what he does and that which he creates.

I'm a #1 nut for sure, but I may be missing out not owning an M-H.

M-H doesn't have a website. The pics that Nitro X and I have posted of the Hartemann Weiss singleshots use the Hagn action though. Ralf is a heckuva guy. Sure wish Martin Hagn had been there, but I guess he let's Ralf do most of the traveling these days.

Definitely something you want to look into if you love singleshots. If you attend the SCI shows or ACGG shows, there are several custom rifle makers using the Hagn action. You owe it to yourself to check these out. They are spendy, but I've never picked up another rifle that had so much soul.
