THREE DOUBLES FOR AFRICA-WHAT CALIBERS??
      #60766 - 03/08/06 09:35 PM

If you had the luxury of taking 3 Doubles to Africa to roam about hunting the game of your fancy---

Which calibers would you take?
What specifications, weight, scope,no scope, etc would you wish for these rifles?

Would you want to swap one of the double rifles for a Drilling?

9.3 x 74?, smaller?
450/400?
470NE?
500 NE?

What would be the best choices?

I bought my double almost 2 years ago. It came with 3 sets of barrels 7x65R, 9.3x74R and 470 NE. All three have claw mounts and 1.5-6 Ziess Diavari scopes.
I like the setup. I think I could go to Africa feeling "completely covered". Now if I add the set of shotgun barrels this year I'm sure I'd be set.

Of the three you list, my choices would be:

A little 9.3X74R, with claw mounts and a 1.5-5X30mm Lupy scope with a no 4 German post and cross hair, with the post tip lighted! To this rifle I'd add a set of cape gun barrels, 20ga, and 9.3X74R, also with claw mounted scope.

A 450/400NE 3" with claw mounts and the same scope as on the 9.3!

A 500NE sans scope!

I would add a flip-up night sight to all barrel sets!

The 9.3, with it's extra barrel set, would handle everything in a pinch, but the 450/400 would be better in hot sittuations. With a properly mounted scope it could handle it all in most conditions, except where birds are hunted. The 500 will drag you out of some tough sittuations!

Three aren't neccesary, or practical, but since you asked...

300 H&H Flanged Magnum at 7.5lbs, regulated with 220gr bullets, equiped with a 1.5x6 Schmidt&Bender with illuminated reticle in claw mounts, and I'd bring both softs and solids.

375 H&H Flanged Magnum at 8.5lbs, regulated with 300gr bullets, equiped with a 1.1x4 Scmidt&Bender with illuminated reticle, in claw mounts and I'd bring softs and solids.

450 NE 3 1/4" at 10.5lbs, regulated with 480gr bullets, express sights only, and again I'd bring softs and solids.

Given the real world restriction of two rifles, I would be eternally happy with the 375 and 450.

Excellent responses--

The real purpose of the impractical question was to determine the best range or "niche" of various calibers to cover specific African game or situations encountered.

Empirically, It seems having a Double of about 3000 ft pndsenergy, 4000 ftpounds energy and 5000+ft pnds energywould deal with virtually any fun planned nicely along with an ancillary interchangable shotgun barrel. We could have a "light-medium" Double,a "medium" Double and a "heavy" Double with corresponding levels of recoil.

Would the 300 Flanged trajectory make it better at distance than the 9.3 x 74?

Would the 375 flanged have a better trajectory and longer distance hitting capability than a 450/400?

The 300 Mag is the North American all rounder. Is the 375 Flanged the African all rounder for Doubles?

If I could have 6 DR's it would have to be;

240 NE

300 Flanged

375 Flanged

450-400

500

577

Oh wait... you said 3... Well, I guess if I could ONLY bring 3:

300 Flanged

450-400

500 Or maybe a 45-70. Decisions, Decisions

i'm fortunate enough to have that option. Usually its a 470, 9.3x74R and 30:06. If ele or buff are not on the agenda I sub a 300 H&H for the 470

I have taken 2 doubles to Africa on both of my Safaris.
A scoped 9,3x74R and a 450 No2.
On both trips I wish I had a shotgun or even better a drilling.
I now have a 12x12x30-06 Drilling with a S&B 1.1-4 scope. I think those 3 would be a great choice.

As for your original question I would be perfectly happy with the above 2 doubles and throw in my scoped [S&B 1.1-4 withj illuminated reticle] 450/400 3 1/4".

.350 No. 2 NE. Claw mounted scope. 8 3/4 lbs bare. 26" barrels. Non-ejector.

.450/.400 3" or 3 1/4" NE. No scope. 10 to 10 1/4 lbs. 26" barrels. Non-ejector.

.577 3" NE. No scope 13.5 to 14 lbs. 26" barrels. Non-ejector.

Can't really think of a justification for three rifles, and would happily delete the .577 in favor of a shotty.

A 303 Watson Bros, a 369 Purdey and a 500/465 Holland.

Unfortunately I no longer have the Holland or the Purdey..

What Double maker makes various interchangable barrels and an ancillary shotty barrel too??

A 9.3 x 74R, 450/400. 500NE set with a interchangible shotgun barrel sounds enticing. I don't know if that is even possible though.

Wouid various African nations consider the extra barrels as additional rifles restricting them, or the same rifle??

I know Kreighoff does. They make barrels of different calibers and a 20 gauge shotgun barrel for their receivers.
The concept of bringing this into Africa has been gone over here before. I don't remember the outcome. I believe if all the attachments had the same serial number it's one gun. Different serial numbers make different guns.
My 470 and 9.3x74R barrels have the same serial number as the reciever. The 7x65R was added later and has a different serial number. I imagine when I add a shotgun barrel set it too will have a different serial number.

When you add barrel sets after the gun has been made it can only be of a smaller caliber than the gun was proofed for. Otherwise the gun has to go back to the factory for proofing of the new barrel set.

My choices:

1. A DR suitable for general plains game hunting, preferably also able to take reasonable long shots - a QD mounted scoped double in something like .300 Super, .300 Win Mag or 8x75R;

2. A general dangerous game DR preferably also able to double as a medium game rifle if needed - also scoped with QD mounts - in the neighbourhood of a .400 or .500/.416;

3. A big bore for following up dangerous game - .500 3" NE - express sights only.

Add a set of shotgun barrels to one of the above.

If done properly, the rifle must go to the factory anyway, for propper fitting of the new barrel set!

Rather than a set of double shot barrels, the best choice is a set of cape gun barrels. With a shotgun barrel on the left, and a rifle barrel on the right, with the rifle barrel being chambered for the same cartridge as the double rifle barrels.
Example: double rifle chambered for 9.3X74R, with a set of barrels chambered for 20ga/9.3X74R, when hunting birds, one still has the rifle barrel if a world class KUDU shows up, and with a claw mount scope handy, clipped on, gives you a 300 yd single shot for that KUDU!

Mac,
Allow me to clarify. On my Krieghoff a second set of barrels of lesser caliber could be fitted here in Phili by "Krieghoff International" a factory service center not an approved gunsmith. But if the caliber was larger than the gun was manufactured for it has to go back to Germany to the factory for proofing.

Well i would take a double in 8x75RS with Zeiss 2,5-10x42 Victory and my .450 N.E. 3 1/4 with open sights.

Thats enough for my stormcase.

i've got a pair of 20 ga barrels that fit either my 3006 or 9.3. they work great and do get used on almost every trip. only thing about them is that the firing pin on a rifle is much sharper than on a shotgun. thus every so often the firing pin will pierce the primer on a shotshell.

One of the guys on a Valmet thread said the exact same thing. I remember he had a solution, what that was I can't remember.

Get a gun smith to round off the firing pins at the front without
shortening them too much and to check the protrusion length.
A good gunsmith should be able to adjust them to suit both
the rifle and shotgun primers.

Having a primer or be punctured is not good for the rifle
and sends hot burning gases and other crap[ into the action
which means every time it happens the gun should be striped and cleaned.
