Yes it is amost here. Our yearly family hunt is looming. For the first time the group will be bigger than just our family. My daughter is taking a friend along that is studying with her and my son is taking a friend who plans on taking his first animal.
I doodle around in the house, start something and then change to something else. I don't want to work, I want to get in my Land Criuser and get the nose pointing northwards to Victorius. We are almost out of meat, a couple of lost bags are lying around in the bottom of the freezer, all the boerewors is finished, no more biltong or mince. I need the time to fly.
We will be hunting a little bit differently this year. Previous years we bought all our proviant. This year I suggested that we start preparing well in advance and make jam and bake our own rusks and cookies to take along. We had mega fun in doing this as a family. Everyone had a egg to lay and lots of tasting was bone, a couple of flops or misreadings ended up in ginger bread instead of ginger cookies, but it was all part of the fun.
All the containers is standing in our dinning room ready to be packed, the cookie jars are filled, the rifles cleaned, ammo is packed and we cannot wait for Sunday, when we will take the road.
Another first will be for my son. He will be hunting with his bow this year. It will be hard work for him as he wants to stalk an Impala and take it. It will not be easy and dad will help where I can.
Of course our Jack Russel will join us, I need some company for my wife while she is busy dropping us and picking us up in different areas on the farm, he might come in handy to track animals as well.
I am also waiting for the aproval of a pest permit for a Leopard. I might just get lucky, who knows.
In the meantime I still have about 60 hours to kill, what happened to the time machine?

Good luck on leopard and the permits. I hope you have some photos to share when you return.
It sounds like a very social hunt and they can be very memorable.
May your freezers be overflowing when you return.

Yes it will be a very sociable event Elzet and Noodle will be in charge of the photographs, they are quite good at it.

I had a pest permit last year, but did not put in enough effort to get mr. spots. I applied to renew the permit. I will have to settle for a couplke of baboons for bait. I don't want to use my meat to bait mr spots. I only have a week. The big thing is to see if I can get him to the bait. Once I know he is coming in to the bait, I can always go back later and get him.

Did you ever try catnip? Hang a little meat and smear catnip around. That would save your good meat for your supper?

I have never heard of catnip. What is it and where can I get hold of it. I will be dragging the intestines of the animals I hunted in the area where we know the leapord is active. I have a reasonable idea where to maybe expect to get him. The big problem is their large home range. Hopefully he will visit Victorius while I am there. If he comes in it will have to be before 18h00. While we are hunting, there will be no moonlight available.

Jaco:
Catnip is an herb from the mint family. It causes some cats to go nuts for a few minutes. They will roll around, rub all over it and other silly things. Kinda like a dog that finds a really rotten carcass in the bush. I've heard it attracts Tigers.
Its available in Pet stores in the U.S.A.

Can you imagine the amount of trouble I will have with the SPCA if it comes out. 
I know live goats were used in the old days and it worked very effectively. They were tied to a tree and they waited for the cattle killer to come in. Boom end of the problem.

Yes I guess that would be the case.
The reason I asked was I met a PH in South Africa who had had great success using them.
I guess the SPCA would consider it cruel to use one purposely as bait, but not if one was killed in a paddock by chance.

I am busy preparing a report, But I am still recovering from the shock of returning home after the hunt. I is not easy to get the bush out of my mind. Oh how I hate the city.
