Holland & Holland Deluxe 470 (auctioned yesterday)
      #59391 - 28/06/06 03:47 PM

This 1959 rifle was sold by auction in San Francisco, CA for $80,000.00.

Looks nice and I am no expert here, but isn't that a good price for this rifle? It does not specify if it is a " Royal."

Thanks. Link to rifle below, I think!!!

Sure wish I had been there & had the bucks for it. Click pic for larger. My first time posting a photo!

It doesn't say Royal as it is a "Modele de Luxe" which is
a higher grade again.

You can just make it out on the Toplever.

Generally quality is not up there from 50's made guns
and you really need to "feel" it in the hands to get an
idea of what we call "build quality". 60 and 70's Purdey's
suffered from the same thing.

I had the rifle in hand, and it was about as good as it gets! The only drawback for me was the long beavertail forend. The white line [original] pad could easily have been changed. The pop up "ghost ring" rear sight was great. What was not advertised was that the pinless locks were engraved by Ken Hunt and extremely well done. I was the underbidder, and had left a bid with a friend as I was in Zim at the time of the auction. If I had been here, who knows what would I would have to be selling now in order to cover my next bid.
All the best, SXS

It just must have been one of those guns where everything clicked
and was just right.

Sounds like a beauty.

In reply to:

engraved by Ken Hunt

So what is that to replace toay... about $180K?

Even for a gun of that vintage, 80K for a Ken Hunt engraved H&H 470 seems like a good buy.

No, with 13.5% buyer's premium on the hammer price it's $90,800. That's a lot for a used Royal, Deluxe or no, and it's a ton for a '50s gun.

The individual rifle may have been nice, but value wise, it really doesn't matter. All of the British makers built guns in the '50s & '60s that they're still trying to live down. The double guns, especially the double rifles, from that period are automatically suspect and it's hard to get full price out of them. The buyer may find that out the hard way when he gets ready to sell.

If as he said and the fit and finish was as good as a 30's gun,
I think it was a so so buy.

After all, if you wanted one made today how long would
you have to wait ?

I think alot of it comes down to personal liking of the gun
and build quality - and I haven't seen that made really nice 50's made
Holland's, Purdey's etc.

And it has a peep sight, for God's sake! Ordinarily I would think that would negatively influence the value.

This rifle was built for a user who knew and specified exactly what he wanted. The fit and finish were up to what one would expect in a deluxe. As I said before, the beavertail forend looked a bit strange as it was fairly long; but it did not feel ungainly. I would have had to take about 1/8 inch out of the cheekpiece for it to fit me perfectly. [I shoot quite a bit of cast] Mr Hopkins obviously specified the peep sight with a single folding 100 yard leaf. The rifle had great balance and pointability; and with the peep, was like lightning. After 15 or more trips to africa, the rifle was still as tight as the ainal sphincter of a sperm whale during a power dive, and did not look to have been rejointed. I do have to admit, 75 K was my top bid when sober. My next bid would have to have been 85K or about $100,000 with the juice. I probably would have gotten cold feet anyway. There are always more rifles out there; but not many like this one.
All the best, SXS

Peep sights on double rifles actually make alot of sense. I have handled
a couple old ones with peeps and they are fast.

It also helps when your eyesight goes.
