Rstocking, Other than JJ, who?
      #59334 - 27/06/06 08:38 AM

JJ has lost an experienced aprentice to the current boom in the oil drilling industry. I had planned to have JJ restock and then rechamber my Marcel Thys sidelock DR as soon as I return from Zim this fall. It is a more difficult than typical restocking job since the rifle is a sidelock and has an extended top tang which will need to be bent some since I am a lefty. Estimated time for JJ to restock my rifle has gone from 6mo to a year. This brings with it the likelihood of interfering with next years trip, which is a problem.

Who else would be qualified to do this job?

Thanks for any sugestions.

JPK

You need someone experienced with the extended top strap which J. J. is. It's a tough stocking job.

Paul Hodgins in Logan, UT is an ex-Holland stocker who will have experience with it. Last I heard he was quoting a year too.

I spoke with Paul about a year ago (for what I can't recall), but the time frame was indeed a year and the price was $5K for a complete restocking - I don't think that price included the blank.

Try DJ Thys. He taught JJ how to stock and is much better. Usually 2-3 months. He is the one who probably stocked your rifle originally.

He took 3 days from blank to checkering on a rifle of mine.

I do know someone here in Brazil who can do a stock in less than a month (he did a Perazzi stock for me in 4-5 days) of superb quality. Price is around 500 US$ with average wood blank included (Imbuia). Yes, things here are just a bit cheaper!!! I just would not recommend because of the paperwork which would be quite complicated and shipping internationally an expensive double rifle such as a Thys too dangerous for my taste.

I would appreciate if any of you know names and addresses of "gun stock fitters", people who can from initial measurements suggest the dimensions of a double rifle stock.

thanks, Dante

I would also like to know of such a person. I have heard there is a guy down at Perazzi in LA that is very good but his name escapes me at the moment.

I just had a low wall checkered by Doug Mann in Illnois. He is a gun guild guy and does complete stocking.

Here is his personal shotgun he posted in the doublegun forum

You might try KEN OWEN, go to www.doublegunhq.com and click on "links" for his PHONE NUMBER. No internet contacting.

Mickey,

Can you tell us how to contact DJ Thys? Do you have any idea of his charges?

Thanks,
Curl

No idea as my work was a few years ago. At that time it was around $700 with no checkering. He will be dealing in Euros not dollars I think.

I am not at homeright now and will try and find the info when I get back.

450 NE No2,

I have decided to keep it a 458 since between the time the original post was made and now I have found a load that gives me great consistency and accuracy and velocity with the 500 gr Woodleigh solids.

Using just one grain over Hornady's starting load with AA 2230 I'm getting 2130fps at 10', accuracy is great and the load shoots right to the bead. I also have the 450gr North Fork load that gives 2180fps at 10' that was pressure tested and found to be well under a max load. That and the ability to use the Federal Trophy Bonded loads, with adequate accuracy, should my ammo go missing, has me leaving well enough alone.

No extraction or ejection issues in about 750 rounds.

I may restock the rifle though. Recall that I'm a lefty and the rifle isn't. The cheek peice is being removed now and I'll be there for removing a bit of wood from the right side to improve conscistency of mount. If this stockwork does what I think it will then I'm done. If not I'll have it restocked.

I am going to be using it on, hopefully, many elephants in the future, so I am going to make it "my" rifle.

JPK

Bulldog,

A fellow named John Myer is doing it. He is the owner of Custom Gunsmithing, Inc and is located in Boyce, Virginia, about an hour and fifteen minutes from my home. I've seen his work and it is very good. He is not a double rifle specialist though.

He has been my reloading teacher for developing the loads for my DR. We reload in his shop, then take the rifle outside and shoot off a standing bench. You can't imagine how nice it is to be able to load where you shoot, and shoot off a standing bench.

Sounds like a good plan to me.
To those of you who don't know I have handled JPK's double and it is NICE.

Now all you need to do is get a scoped 9,3x74R double to go with the 458.

JPK,

Why wouldn't you consider David Trevallion to restock your DR if it needs it. He carries a high reputation. Anybody have any comments?

NE 450No2,

I was thinking about a 375H&H!

I have considered a 9.3x74 or a 375FL Mag and even given a thought to a 375H&H double; but I am very happy with my 375H&H bolt rifle. Perhaps in the future.

Capt Curl,

I hadn't thought of him for some reason. Probably because I think of him as a shotgun man. I should give him a call, thanks for the sugestion. Anyone else with experiences or thoughts?

I did speak with Duane Weibe. He can get it done in time for a hunt next fall if I get him the rifle soon after my hunt this Sept and Oct. He has done about 15 DR's. The guy I choose, if I go this route, needs to be good with metal too since the extended top tang needs to come over to accomodate cast on and up a bit to reduce drop, as well, the long trigger gaurd tang needs to come over for cast on.

Since you are a "Pioneer" in using a rimless double, you are a natural for a 375 H&H double. I say go for it.
I recommend a Chapuis 375 H&H, scoped of course.

However should you have a sudden conservative streak, I can say that a Chapuis 9,3x74R is a BAD TO THE BONE hunting double rifle.

But with a 458 double and a 375 H&H double....
Ballistically speaking you have it covered, and you can find ammo any where ammo can be found.

Baised on what you have said about your Marcel Thys 458 functioning 100% I would not even consider changing it to the 450 Nitro.
