Manton 400 at Cabelas

while i was at cabelas in buda texas today, i
looked at 2 krieghoff, 2 merkels.. the krieghoff's are in 500 and 470 nitro... the merkels are 470 nitro and 30-06..... most impresssed with the merkels... seems to have better balance... i'm a novice when it comes to the doubles, but i liked the merkel 140-2 better....also looked at a searcy in 470 nitro at dury's in san antonio., texas... its a used gun, made for an outdoor writer, used very little....prices ranged from $10K TO 13K US....

NOt much you can do about it though !!!

However a mate of mine has a Manton and it weigh's
11 Lbs but "feels" and "balances" like it's a 9lb gun.

IMHO, people look too much at the weight and not how
much it "feels" and "balances".

I'm sure it would be pleasant to shoot at the range but after carrying my 10.75lb 470 in October in Zim I'd opt for a lighter not heavier 400.

Maybe I'm just getting old and weak.

Well I must admit, i've been looking at that rifle (drooling) since this post went up.. If not for the weight factor, I most likely would have grabed it by now.. likely others are of the same thought, it's still there.. PLEASE somebody buy this rifle

Most 450-400's are over 10 pounds.

Yes, they are. British built .400s under 10 lbs are pretty scarce. Most of the better guns ran between 10 and 10.25 lbs. Some were slightly heavier, and, like .500 suggests, those just depend on the quality of the gun. Eleven lbs is just too heavy for a .400 though.. That's heavier than many pre-war British .470s.

I recall seeing a Army/Navy 450-400, I believe it was 3" at 9lbs.. I don't recall who was selling it, but I do know it's long gone..

I'll bet it wasn't 9 on the scales. I've seen a few .400s advertised at 9.5 or so that weren't. Most of the A & N .400s I've handled were around 10.5.

I don't know who bought it... But I'm sure glad they did!.. Providing the bores were as good as the rest looked, in my limited experiance the asking price seemed pretty close to acceptible.. Comments?
