Trigger pull weight
      #59155 - 23/06/06 01:24 AM

I'm considering to send my Merkel .470 to the gunsmith for a trigger-job.The front trigger has a good enough pull whereas the rear trigger must have a weiht close to 10pounds... Way to heavy, especially when you know whats up next..

What is the lowest trgger-pull weight that should be recommended on a heavy DR?

I'd very much like them to be close to 3-4pounds.. Too light?

I. and everyone else who has shot the rifle hits perfectly well with their first shot, and quite a bit low with the second, 10-15cm at 40yards. Is thisdue to heavy trigger compared with jerking the trigger aswell?

Good question.

My 2 Merkel's were the same so I got them done
which is 4.5 front trigger, 5.5 rear trigger but remeber this is what I am used to
on DR's and may not be for everyone. All of my hunting DR's are set to this.

My Bolt actions rifles are set at 3.5 lbs.

Hope this helps

A friend of mine has a Merkel 9.3 x 74 .We could't make the thing group until we finally figured the trigger pulls were a bit heavy.Upon checking with the gunsmith and using a LCD digital trigger gauge with a max capicty of 12 pounds. Both triggers were in excess of 12 pound.
they are 4 and 5 pound now and the rifle shoots very well.
May be it's a Merkel thing ?
good shooting

Maybe it's a liability thing.

Check out the trigger pull on any new
US Bolt Action - I think one of the reason
quite a few went to self adjustable triggers !!!

bonde - You can have the trigger pulls lightened on your Merkel 470… within reason.

Make sure you have a reputable DR gunsmith do the work. I don’t know where you live, but this is obviously not a task for a “Jim-Bob’s Gun Repair” shop.

4.5-5 and 5.5-6 is about as light as I would think you would want go in the Merkel, but that’s really up to whomever is working on your particular gun.

The Merkel does not have intercepting sears and the concern with going too light for the rear trigger in a 470 is that the gun doubles from the recoil of the right barrel firing.

In a lighter recoiling rifle (9.3) you could probably go lighter with fewer worries, but in the heavy-recoiling, dangerous game calibers, you’re better off safe than sorry.

sbs470 The 9.3X74R Merkels S/S has a set trigger on the front/right trigger! The trigger pull with this trigger, un-set,will be considerably heavier than when set. The back/Left trigger is not a set trigger. This is one reason you need to have a person who knows double rifles do your triggers. You rarely see set triggers on a shotgun, so the average shotgun smith is not the man you need. I reccomend JJ at Champlins! The un-set front pull should be around 5 lbs, with it set being at around 3lbs. The back trigger should be about 5 lbs.

The 470NE Merkel doesn't have set trigger, and needs to be about 5 lbs for the front, and 5.5 for the rear!

I have both of these rifles, and the un-set portion of my front trigger of the 9.3 rifle is too heavy, and is going to JJ post haste, for some adjustment. My 470NE is perfect, needing no work at all.
