Sabi Rifles pics - sorry for the delay!
      #58948 - 17/06/06 10:51 PM

Folks,

I battled to get these worked out, but finally, here are the pics of the rifles made by Sabi Rifles in RSA. The first 4 images are of a 458 Lott made for a friend & client of mine MarkH - Actually more of a hunting buddy than a client! and the last ones are of the 404 Jeffery I've just bought to use as a company loaner. - There's gonna be a few changes to this one such as QD scope mounts with Swarovski 1.5 - 6 scope and I'll be changing the open sights to a quarter rib at the back and a fibre optic foresight...... whaddya think?

That is a very nice loaner! Both rifles look great.

Boy, those are pretty nice rifles. I would be real happy
with the island sight. Old eyes can't always use anything
closer to the eye. Would you share what the .404 cost
to build?
Thanks

I realise that most safari companies usually just offer fairly basic rifles as loaners - but I've always believed that if a client is paying for an expensive hunt, he has every right to a decent quality rifle if he needs to borrow one. - Add on the fact that I just like good quality anything....... especially regarding rifles and fishing tackle. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing worse than having to use something cheap and nasty in these fields.

As to cost, I actually did a PX with my Blaser R93 30.06, so I can't really give you accurate figures...... I believe that Sabi sell this kind of thing at around R25000 - R3000 - but I'm not really sure. If you wanted to contact them for an accurate price, you can do so at www.sabirifles.co.za The guy to address your enquiry to is Eugene Combrink.

Of course, the price will partly depend on the quality of wood chosen. Both of the rifles shown had middle of the range stock blanks.

I got a quote from them once for a 500 Jeff all kitted out and I think it was right around 5K. I am sure I have the quote around here somewhere. Will see if I can find it.

If you are seriously interested you should submit a quote request on their website for exactly what you want. They got back to me pretty quick when I did.

I think that'd work out about right....... I appreciate there are cheaper rifles (like Bruno etc) and better rifles (like Rigby) - but I reckon Sabi offer an excellent product at a very good price.

Nice rifles and yours is in a classic caliber! If I were a client, I'd almost wish my guncase got misplaced for a day or so to have an excuse to use it.

We thought about a side trip to Sabi when I was in RSA but didn't go. Who's actions do they use or are they making thier own?

My own rifle is a .500 Jeffery built by the same people -so I guess I'm doubly lucky. The (404) rifle is usually in camp even when we don't have clients that need it, and as Mama Shakari usually come along, it's nice to leave a rifle in camp for her to use in case of Lions etc........ if it's being used by a client she just has to chase after the Lions and shout SHOO!!! - That's when she's in a good mood. If she's not, then all she has to do is growl at them!

Hope to hell, she doesn't read this post!

I've just done the maths on the exchange rates and as the Rand is weak against the USD (6.8) the price works out as between US$3675 - US$4360 for a similar rifle.

As the USD is weak against the UK pound (1.88) that works out as an even better deal for anyone with pounds to spend at the moment.......

Rick,

I've just noticed your post about actions. They use a variety of actions depending on what you want. The two pictured are VZ24. If you're a left hander they also have a choice for you including the Rocky Mountain action.

My own carry rifle is in .500 Jeffery and built on a left handed Weatherby action. - I bought the rifle umpteeen years ago as a 416 Wea and they rebuilt it to .500 Jeffery for me about 5 years ago......

I'm not a gunsmith so am not qualified to answer that. - however, they don't seem to have any trouble. Maybe you could e-mail them with that question.

Steve,

The rifles are perfect to my eye. Anything fancier in the wood choice and they would give the hunter the fear of marking them. The quarter rib is perfect and these should be fantastic hunting rifles.

Good hunting with them.

Mehul,

I agree. I prefer a little subtlety in these things. It's always hard to choose a stock, esp for someone else but I really enjoyed making the selection for Mark's rifle. Eugene & I must have spent the better part of a day looking over various stock blanks.

I didn't get a choice for the .404 stock as it had already been built for the original purchaser. - who never had the chance to collect it......

It only took the SA Central Firearms Register people 2 weeks to process the paperwork but when I went to collect it yesterday, the permit had been signed by the wrong official.... and the bloody computer doesn't allow a second copy to be printed! - Hopefully, they'll get it sorted out today. - Ah well, I guess these things happen in Africa.......

I've never tried to feed the 505 in their rifles and I'm not sure they offer it - but the .500 Jeffery feeds like butter........

Just taken the .404 to the range for its first test shoot. It wasn't very technical and I just used a pile of tyres for a rest and knelt to shoot. I tried a variety of loads and the best proved to be 75 grains of S365.

Shot at 30 yards over open sights set to a 6 o clock hold and the rifle grouped to 3/4 of an inch. I reckon by the time I get the scope fitted, it should more or less cloverleaf at 100 yards........ I'm happy with that.

I didn't have time to order GS Custom bullets so just loaded a few Sabi mono and Woodleigh softs. - I'll get the GS Custom FNMS sorted out when I get home from Tanzania......

Just thought I'd update this. I've been in Tanzania for a few weeks and the 404 got it's first use. Although I wasn't completely happy (to say the least) with the bullet performance on the softs the rifle proved a complete success and the rifle took 5 or 6 Buffalo. Penetration was phenomenal. One (RNSP) bullet went in a buff on a texas heart shot and exited out of the nose, - no expansion whatsoever and a sabi mono solid went through the chest of another buff then through a 30 inch circumference (fairly soft) tree and three quarters of the way through another tree of a similar size. The tracker cut the bullet out with his panga and other than the rifling marks it was undamaged. I was so suprised by this degree of penetration I clocked the rounds as soon as I got home but they're fine.

My camera crapped out on me during the trip but I'll see what I have and try to post a pic or two.

Hallo,

it seems to be good gunsmithwork. They havn´t superfluous
things on it. Weapons for daily work in the woods.
Very nice the barrel-barr with the express-sight on gun No.1.

Manolito

I like the stock design on the rifle.

May I ask how wide is the butt of the stock where the recoil pad would be placed? I find that stockswhich are wider in this area disperse the recoil of big bores a bit better.

It's about an inch and three quarters - but recoil isn't an issue at all as it has a mercury tube recoil arrestor fitted.

The SABI in 500 Jeffery is interesting.

Does SABI have a US Distributor? If not then getting on into the states would be a nightmare.

I wonder how they stack up price wise vs AHR and their 50 bolt gun.Your gun looks impressive for the price.

'Fraid I don't know the answer th that one - but I do know they do sometimes export to the US, UK & Oz. - how often and how many, I don't know though.

As to prices - each rifle is built to the buyers specification - so price will vary accordingly. - Their website is www.sabirifles.co.za.
