Factory 9.3/74 Velocity
      #5891 - 19/12/03 04:02 PM

I'd like to know the TRUE velocity of FACTORY 9.3/74 Rimmed ammo using the 286 grain bullet.
The Ammo Brand Name, Bullet Type/Weight, Claimed Velocity, Actual Chronographed Velocity, and Barrel Length would be good.
Thanks

Can't help you. I never used factory ammunition in my 9.3x74R.

Mick,
Have you cronographed 286 gn handloads in you double.
If so what velocity gave best regulation?

4seventy
The following loads were chronoed in my 9,3x74R Chapuis.
These are averages of the left and right bbls.

Norma 286gr Alaska 2250fps
RWS 286gr. Soft Point 2270fps
Sellier & Belliot 285 Soft Point 2190fps
All the following are Superior Ammo loads
286 Woodleigh Soft 2311fps
286 Nosler Partition 2308fps
286 Barnes Super Solid 2314fps. [Shot these before I know better]
300gr Swift A-Frame 2217fps.

The following are reloads that regulate well in my Chapuis.
270 Speer 59 gr of RL-15 2320fps
286gr Noslar Partition 63gr of IMR 4831 2137fps
286gr Nosler Partition 65gr. of IMR 4831 2218fps

I currently use 65 grains of IMR 4831 with 286 gr Nosler Partitions, Woodleigh Softs and the 285 Hawk .035jkt.
It looks like that 63.5gr of IMR 4831 is going to be the best load for the Woodleigh Solids.
Hope this helps.

450 No2,
Thanks for the great info.
Those superior ammo loads with 286 grainers at over 2300, did any of those show signs of high pressure?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
The answer is no, no signs of high pressure. The Superior is the finest factory ammo in 9,3x74R that I have fired.
Very Very accurate.

NE450,

Where do you purchase the Superior brand ammo? Is it a Canadian loading or from OZ?? I love my various 9,3x74r's and reload for them using several different powders.

Have you tried IMR 4064? It has been about perfect in four different 9,3's I've had or still shoot.

Your chrono results are not dissimilar to my results. I think anyone reading your post could bank on your data. I tend to get a bit better velocities with the 4064 using up to 286 Gr Noslers and Woodleighs, and have had no signs of excessive pressure. It has been my best accuracy powder, with the most consistant velocities. I did get about 2340 fps out of factory Norma 285 Oryx ammo on average...a bit hot.

Drillings & 9,3x74r double rifles...? What a man of good taste!

I have never tried 4064 but should. It may be the powder that www.superiorammo.com is using. Their loads with the Woodleigh Softs and Solids and Nosler Partitions shoot better in my Chapuis than my reloads.

4064 seems to have been developed just for the 9,3x74r, the way it performs in my guns, at least!
