Qantas - flying with firearms and ammunition
      #58663 - 12/06/06 04:19 AM

Qantas requires a pre-approval procedure for passengers wishing to carry firearms and ammunition in their checked luggage.
Qantas - Dangerous goods web information page

The person to contact at QANTAS is :-
Mr Michael Montuori
Dangerous Goods Operations Manager
Tel 02 9691 1430 Int'l +61 2 9691 1430
mmontuori@qantas.com.au

Another contact:
Mr Laurie Willoughby
Dangerous Goods Compliance
Tel 02 9691 8463 Int'l +61 2 9691 8463

Qantas will provide you with a faxed (maybe emailled) letter of permission to carry with you for your flight(s).

The procedure is fine and I have never had any problems myself. However they may refuse to accept the firearms and ammunition if it has not been pre-arranged.

In reply to:

7.3 Firearms
We may agree to carry firearms and ammunition for hunting or sporting purposes as Checked Baggage. If we do, these must be packed in accordance with all applicable national and international laws and regulations. Our approval may be withheld at our sole discretion. Applications for the carriage of firearms and ammunition for hunting or sporting purposes must be submitted at least 2 working days prior to your anticipated departure date.

Ammunition must be carried separately to firearms and ammunition must not exceed 5 kgs in weight per person.

Ammunition should be carried in original factory ammunition boxes or ammo cases similar to MTM caseguards. The main issue is each round must be separated and they should not rattle against each other without being separated.

In reply to:

Ammunition (cartridges for weapons) securely packaged (in Division 1.4S, UN0012 or UN0014 only), in quantities not exceeding 5kg (11lb) gross weight per person for that person's own use, excluding ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles. Allowances for more than one passenger must not be combined into one or more packages.
./ permitted as checked baggage
./ pre-approval required

If entering Australia an import permit will be required for both your firearm(s) and ammunition you are carrying.
