Ok, I'm starting to get pieces together for multiple builds. I've decided that one of the guns I build is going to be a 500 NE. However I really don't need the full powered 500, so have been thinking of the Light Nitro/Nitro for Black load for regulation. However I'd like the versatility of using a heavier bullet. So my question is this. Assuming the action is strong enough. Do you think it would be easier to build a 500 NE for the full Nitro load and develop a load using the 440 gr bullet or would it be easier to build for the 440 gr bullet then work up a load that the 570 gr bullet regulates at?

... I assume this objective, ie ensuring it can shoot a full power load with a 570 gr bullet will result in a higher re-sale value.

If it can shoot a lighter load with a 440 gr as well it would be icing on the cake.

My opinion is if it was regulated for a 440gr load and the 570 gr load didn't work out, if selling you would loose 95% of potential customers. JMO.

A double that is regulated for anything other than the full power load is nearly worthless.

However, the good news is that if you regulate for 570 grains at 2150 fps, it is very easy to get a lighter bullet to regulate at a lower velocity. For example, I use 110.0 grains IMR4831 behind a 570 grain bullet in my .500 NE, but I can also shoot a 500 grain cast lead bullet ahead of 45.0 grains XMP5744 powder and it regulates perfectly and has the same POI at 50 yards as the full power load.

I have no intentions of selling this gun. I asked about the loads not for re-sale value but for myself. As I indicated I don't really have a need for the extra power above the Nitro for Black load levels. However if it's relatively easy to get the lighter loads to regulate in a full nitro gun then why limit myself? However if the choice is one or the other it will probably be for the Light nitro loading as that is what is more useful for me.

Thanks for the info on the lighter loads. Have you ever tried the 440 gr woodleigh's in your 500 for reduced loads? If so did you get them to regulate and at what velocity?

I never tried 440's. But I did try 700 grain cast and they would not regulate at all.
