Prussian Charles Daly Drilling arrived
      #57824 - 26/05/06 12:54 PM

Since Africa is out, for a while, at least, I had to do something to compensate...didn't I...???

I just received a nice little sidelock, side cock Charles Daly Prussian drilling in 16/16/30-30. It is older, but still tight and sound otherwise.

I must say I'm glad that there is limited interest in drillings, so I can still find and afford them.

Very cool. I have actually been looking for a drilling almost exactly like that one. Mind if I ask you where you found it and how much it was listed for?

I found it on An Auction site. The price was right at $2,300.00, shipped in a hard case. I had dealt with the seller before. I have its exact mate in 12/12/30-30; this 16ga is much trimmer and is built on a smaller receiver. It will be my grouse and deer gun for NW Montana when I make the move.

If for any reason you want to sell either of them I would gladly take one off your hands at a profit for you.

banzi,

That Kreighoff built Kettner is a good buy. I sold a very nice Kettner to Lee LeBas a while back. It was a best quality side plated 16/16/8X57JRS that weighed 6 1/4 pounds. He is now advertising it for 2 1/2 times what he paid me.

Kettner marketed only the finest maker's guns.

I'll take some pics of the 12ga next to the 16ga; the difference is marked. This configuration is by far my favorite, as it doesn't use the Greener side safety, but a top tang safety, and one can cock/un-cock the rifle.

I really don't have much use for a drilling. Unless it replaced my combo gun for call furbearers or use on turkey. However the ones above were just picked out on a quick search. If I were serious about one I'd give careful consideration to this Kettner. However I'd probably be looking for more of something that had a much smaller rifle like 12x12x22 hornet.

Nice drilling, but why a chambering of a .30/.30? Where these made for the USA market?

Can you post pictures of you 12x12x30-06?

I saw a nice Charles Daly Drilling (12x12x257 Roberts) but he wants 6500 for it which seems pretty expensive;

Exactly...These were made by J.P. Sauer for Charles Daly for export to the US. They didn't have a cheek piece or side clips, and they were also imported in 25-35 and 38-55. I have seen one in 25 Krag, but only one.

I'll take some photos of the 16ga and 12 ga together. There are minor engraving differences, and the 12ga frame is much larger. I would say that they used the same frame for the 16 and 20 gauge guns. I have only run across one 20 gauge, and the seller wanted $8,500.00 for it...to much as it was only the Superior grade, like these two of mine. I owned a 12 & 30-30 Diamond grade as a boy, but it was lost to a burgler. Cops killed the bastard about six months later in a shoot out. The gun was taken into evidence and never seen again. The cops were as crooked as the other thief, it seems. I knew who got my drilling and three other of my guns. He must have made the wrong enemy at some time; he was shot off his patrol motorcycle, and the murder was never solved.

The American market Dalys all have long barrels and a lot of drop in the stock. I have always wondered why they were never chambered in 30-40 Krag? It seems that it would be a natural, given the vintage of the guns. It was our 303 or 8X57JR...
