2ND DOUBLE SUGGESTIONS NEEDED!!
      #57445 - 20/05/06 11:15 PM

I have a 470 NE in a Merkel and it is great fun practicing with it. I think I will even try shoot pigs and deer with it this year before going to Africa.

Any suggestions for a 2nd working Double? I live in the states and shoot black bear as well as hunt elk/moose in the deep timber. This Double would be one I would probably use much more than the 470.

I have little Double knowledge other than that obtained here on this website. From previous discussions I am thinking that a 9.3 x74R with a QD scope would be great fun and have fewer ammunition supply issues as well.A 30.06 Double is lower on the list due caliber and not being rimmed.

What best calibers and makes of Doubles would the members of this forum suggest? What power/make of scope would be suggested?

Much thanks to all for any input given beforehand.

I would certainly recommend a 9.3x74R. It's a great caliber for anything you mentioned. Various choices are out there in a new product, and there are lots of vintage rifles to choose from. A QD scope is good to have on this rifle.

There's a pretty nice .400/.350 HERE. Trouble is, with that chambering you would be taking on a load of misery. Also, if it has true 9mm barrels you are in trouble with bullets. If the bores are .358" no problem with bullets. This rifle is at the top of the chart on pricing IMO.

A good 8x57JRS is no slouch. Not quite as popular, but a great round with plenty of bullets available. Hallowell has a Chapuis in that chamber.

The 9.3x74R is universally available.

The 9.3 is the obvious choice for ease of ammo, size and availability. There are , though, many other calibers in that price range that would be just as fun and just as good for the reloader.

How abut a 405? A 360#2? A 400/350? A 348?

AK--

Thats certainly a beauty in 8 x 57JRS !!

Oh, the lust and fire a new rifle can cause in your soul! I feel your pain

I have been looking at the Merkel 140 with the auto ejectors and scope mounts in the 9.3 x 57. I like the handy 21" barrels too--

Hmm-
I wonder how this compares to a Chapuis? This 2nd Double gun would be hunted hard and regularly.

hoppdoc, I own several double rifles of different chamberings, but when I get ready to go to Africa, the two Boyt takedown soft cases are filled with my Merkel 140-2, 470NE Safari double, and the little Merkel 140E, 9.3X74R, and go into the Tuff-pak. This is my favorite pair of doubles for hunting Africa, and the little 9.3X74R Merkel gets a work out often right here in the good old USA, and Canada. the 470 with North Fork solid copper, cup points is the only bullet needed for that rifle, and the 9.3 works fine with 286 gr Nosler Partitions, and NF's cup points, or square points for solids. Works for me!

The good thing about the 9.3 for your light rifle is, if anything happens to the big rifle, the 9.3X74R will finish the hunt for you where something in the 8MM class might not be allowed.

A 9,3x74R is your best choice. especially with a scope in QD mounts.
It is a great hunting gun.

Well I have a .450 and a 9.3x74R so I also agree a .470 and a 9.3 would go well.

A chambering I am gaining interest in is the 8x75RS.
