Judging Buffalo

I'm scheduled to hunt buffalo the first part of July this year and was wanting to know what is considered a trophy buffalo. I've read 115 inches is excellent. Are these measurements tip to tip along the curves? What do you look for to know your looking at an above average buffalo?

I dont believe there is any sure fire method of picking a 116 SCI buffalo.
However your PH will reconize a big one and also when you see a big one it will stand out in the crowd.
100 SCI is a good trophy.
Measured outside curves plus base diameter of each horn.

A 116 SCI scoring buffalo would have to be one of the best for the year.

A 100 SCI buffalo is quite possible and in an area like Matt Graham's - Hunt Australia - camp at Gan Gan on the coast of Arnhemland you would have a very good chance at a 100+ water buffalo. When I hunted there all of the buffalo I saw were the 'crescent' shaped horned buffalo, except for one old scarred warrior who stood us off. He was more of the 'sweeper' shape than is typical for that area. His horns were old, scarred and 'broomed' off at the tips. So probably scored less because of that but would have made a fine trophy. I did not take him as he was one of the first buffalo we saw, on the first morning of hunting. In any case I am more than happy with what I ended up with.



This buffalo measured 106 inches scored by adding the outside of the horns plus the two circumferences of the bases of each horn. I do not know the individual measurements as I never measured him, and he is STILL (!!!) with the taxidermist even though taken in 2004!

This bull still with 'sharp' tips has more of a 'sweeper' shape. I have never measured it but this plus the next one are in my shed and I can measure them if I can find a tape measure .

They were taken near the Wilton River in Central Arnhemland last year with Graham Williams of Australia Buffalo Hunters. The bulls in that area have more of the 'sweeper' characteristic with fewer having the more crescent shapes.



Both Matt Graham and Graham Williams are members of NitroExpress.com though are too much in the bush nowadays to drop in on us on the internet. I understand both have been busy doing a lot of hunting.

Great information. I'll be hunting with Brenton Hurt, he owns Terrirtory Buffalo Safaris. Hopefully he has some nice buffalo in his area.

Brenton has good buffalo and is a good and well respected PH so
you should have a lot of fun.

I believe Brenton Hurt has a concession in Arnhemland immediately to the South of Hunt Australia's area at Gan Gan. They "share" and sometimes "overlap" the boundary I think from a story or two. I think this is right (??) but he may also have other areas.

If this is where you are hunting it will be good coastal water buffalo country.

What time of the year?

This is the second water buffalo taken in 2004 while I was there. We hunted 2x1 and "Dr Deth" as he is nicknamed, took this fine trophy. Another "crescent" shaped set of horns.

So you can get a idea this one measured out at 99 1/2 SCI points.

I will be hunting the end of June, first of July. The first part of the trip we will be in Sydney then Cairns. The second part of the trip we will meet Brenton in Gove to go to the buffalo camp. My wife and I are both looking forward to the trip.

Now here is an exceptional buffalo.

The bull shot by Colin Lane that features on the front of the Woodleigh catalog was an unguided hunt. .... Mel Burton did a full body mount of the animal which is now here in Mandurah. Colins bull measured 49L 47.5R 18 L 18R =132.5 and most definately a bull !
