Reduced 500Ne load
      #56772 - 10/05/06 10:10 AM

Does anyone know of a reduced 500 NE load that would still be capable of taking a Buffalo? I am looking for something with less recoil still capable of using on Buff without having to re regulate the rifle.

The reason I ask is that I am having a 500 NE built. I want my father to be able to shoot it if he wants to on our upcoming TZ hunt. He doesn't shoot much but can fire a 375 H&H of the bench without problems.

Is this a possibiltiy?

I would rather use a .375 than a reduced .500 NE load. Ms. Brooks of Barnes Bullets used a reduced .500 NE load for an elephant and it took her 19 shots or so. The problem was poor penetration. (But you will not see that story in their advertising materials...)

However, here is a reduced .500 NE load which I use that regulates.

45.0 grains XMP5744 behind a 500 grain lead bullet. But it would work with a 570 grain bullet too, although you might want to increase it by 5 grains or so. Expect something in the neighborhood of 1500 fps.

So basically it isn't a possibility to hunt Buffalo with a 500 NE using reduced loads. IMO 1500 fps isn't sufficient for buffalo.

I am pretty sure the GS Custom makes a 500gr FN solid. Maybe one of these at 2000 fps or so would be sufficient with acceptable recoil. What do you guys think?

He could use the 375 but I just wanted him to be able to use the DR if he wanted to.

Do you use a filler with your 5744 load? What primer?
Thanks...
Otto

Bulldog,

If you use 500 Grain's reduced load for your dad to become familiar with the gun then use full loads for the hunt you will have the best of both worlds. He'll only need to fire a handfull of full loads loads here to make sure his grip on the rifle is adequate and confirm his sight picture. Perceived recoil when you're shooting at live game is nothing compared to perceived recoil at the range. I'll add that perceived recoil when you're standing at the range is a whole lot more tolerable than perceived recoil at the bench.

I don't know the load but quite a few people use the
440gn Woodleigh which is a BP Bullet for shooting
Pigs etc out of 500 Nitro's using a reduced load with a filler.

Someone may know the load.

It is also easy to get to regulate in a 500 Nitro Double Rifle.

Bulldog, even at 2000 fps the .500 NE is a very obnoxious caliber. Shedding 150 fps does not do much to mitigate recoil.

As for the XMP5744 load, I use F215 primers and NO FILLER and it regulates just fine. 3-4 inch groups at 50 yards are typical, although I could probably improve on that if I tinkered with different lubes and sizing but I am too lazy for that. The bullets are sized to .512".

I tried out some 700 grain cast lead bullets in my .500 NE but they never regulated, and kicked like hell.

I was thinking that sheding 70 grains of bullet weight and 150 fps might be more along the lines of a 458 wm...especially in an 11 lb package.

Are those gas checked lead bullets?

No gas check. Just WW dropped from the mold into 5 gallons of water for hardening.

The lube is a proprietary mixture of crayons and candles from yard sales and wax toilet seals from Home Depot.

OK, just kidding about the lube. But it smells like Crayola crayons and reminds me of kindergarten.

I am wondering if the loss in sectional density by going down from 570 grains to 500 grains in .510" caliber would result in a significant decrease in penetration.
