The .450Mar is slighty better than the .45/70 in there factory form but the .45/70 can be handloaded to hotter specs. I use a Marlin .444Mar.and use 265g Hornady's and they flatten any pig! at present I am toying with my Winchester 1895 in .405Win and Savage 99 in .358Win . I presume your use of these calibres is for pigs?

I would have loved to buy one of those 1895's in .405 Winchester last year (?) but couldn't fit it into the budget at the time.

I would much rather have a traditional .405 in a Win 1895 than a .45/70 Marlin or similar. Something fitting in the combination.

Aaahh, now we're talking... The 444 is the best... Better penetration (265gr) flatter shooting, less recoil.. I had both at the same time, I finaly sold the 45-70 .. To make it perform on par with the 444 had to load it up, then that lever action stock design beats you up.. Did these side by side comparisons while culling wild pigs over a two year span.. Have not used the 450, but can only think of it as a hot 45-70
