Great story. I'm not surprised about the 458 deflecting off the tooth as a friend of mine shot a Lion in the face with a 577 and had the jaw deflect the bullet out of the cheek. It turned the charge but did very little real damage to the Lion.
A moving shot at something that will kill you if given a chance is not such a good idea it would seem.

Mickey - Until reading your post, I was taking the deflection aspect of the story with a 50lbs. bag of rock-salt. With a .577 you say?! I find that quite amazing and have, just now, cancelled next weekend's lion shoot.

When you think about it a Lion has to have Avery strong and dense jaw bone and teeth. For them to be able to break a Buffalo's neck with their teeth makes this mandatory.
The Lion in question did receive a broken jaw and lost most of the teeth on the right side but the bullet failed to penetrate beyond and exited out the lower cheek. It must have been a scary time as Kurt was on his hands and knees in thick thorn when the Lion came. The tracker couldn't even move out of the way and just sunk straight into the earth..
He was shooting A Square Lion Loads which also probalbly contributed to the story.

Yup! The only thing "A-Square" I've ever appreciated is their reloading manual.
