Which 9.3mm is a better choice???
      #55364 - 21/04/06 08:32 AM

I want a plain and effective "working gun" to hunt water buffalo and hogs. It would be nice if this one gun could be used to shoot some ducks too!

There is a Rizzini O/U that comes with a 9.3x74R and a 20 gauge barrel.

There is also a Chapuis 9.3x74R that can come with a shotgun barrel too.

The Rizzini is much cheaper, however the Chapuis is a S/S. Which would you pick?

The O/U Rizzinis I've seen were good guns. I have a Chapuis and like it alot.

It really depends on how imporant having the SxS is to you. I'd go with a SxS because that's just me, but there is nothing wrong with a double barrel set Rizzini!

Despite my tounge-in-cheek response above, NitroX had quite a bit of fun with his O/U 9.3 not too long ago. I would still vote SxS for me personally...unless maybe the difference in price is going to let you take the rifle for a memorable hunt.

I prefer side-by-side rifles and shotguns, but I do own a nice O/U rifle. Go with what you like better. If you change your mind, sell it and get another. They do transfer, you know!

Best of luck,

Thanks for inputs. I certainly like the S/S rifles better because reloading is so much faster in a dangerous confrontation with buffalo. Specially when you are a bit undergunned (and so is the 9.3 for buff and ele).

The problem with the Chapuis is that the SS .470 or .416 are so heavy (4.9kgs) and not a gun to hunt buff on foot. It may work for Land Rover hunting, but I would prefer go fishing than driving a car or handing my weapon to a paying help (gunbearer). I like, pardon, I love to walk 30kms in a day. And I wouldn't love it the same carrying a 4.9kg gun.

It would be great to be able to find a reasonably priced .400 3" (as was asked in the other thread).

Regarding the effects of drugs, I absolutely love my O/U Perazzi when I shoot olympyc clays. But I see the point with rifles.

If we get serious and face facts, the 9,3X74R is not a DG round, and it makes little difference whether you have a SXS or O/U in that caliber. I love my 9,3X74Rs, but I'm using heavier for the Mahenge North buffalo hunt in late August. I will have along a BBF in 12ga 3" over 9,3X74R for birds and PG, however

I used a 9,3X74R in a drilling several years ago to take a buffalo for a guy who had Hops Flue the whole hunt and never made it very far out of camp. We were all glad he didn't try taking his buffalo. I took it for him, at his request, while Francolin hunting with the drilling. It sure did nothing to convince me that a 9,3X74R is a vaible choice for buffalo.

In a 9,3X74R get what you like and have fun with it. I have preferred my Valmet 412 to my pedigree Lajot o/u and to a Merkel 140 I had some years ago. The Valmet O/U shot rings around the other two guns and is easy to regulate to different loads.

Luv, I totally agree with you regarding the 9.3 being a small caliber for DG.

However, I have shot 5 buffalo with a 30-06 (not because I chose, but because it was the only gun in these ranches) and they all died pretty fast. Including one bull I stopped when charging my friend who wonded it with a .375H&H. The first shot around 20yds did very little, but I was lucky to break his shoulder with my second shot at 10yds.

After many tries I have shot only one buff (amazon water buff around 900kgs) with a 70# recurve with 900 grain arrows (got a complete pass through). That is really dangerous! Bowhunting buff I was charged up a tree by a cow and I wished I had a .400 or even a .470.

Karamojo Bell writtes that in all his life in the bush, despite the hundreds of buff he shot with .256 and 7mms, he never in his life saw a buffalo charge!

But I will try to follow the advice to look for a larger rifle, specially because I indend on hunting ele.

But why a DR .400 has to be worth 2, 3 or even 5 times more cash if they are of similar quality of a 9.3???

I would prefer a good side-by-side in 9.3x74R but the Tikka was available at such a good price and the ease of setting it up with different loads is a BIG plus.

I also think the 9.3mm lends itself to a under-and-over as the U/O double is more often European and the 9.3mm fits the European image to my mind at least.

I want one of every type!

I will probably be taking my .450 S/S plus the 9.3mm in August for my ele hunt. Taking along a shotgun set of barrels too in case I have free days with nothing else to do!

The over and unders in 9,3 are wonderful they have long been my choice for very fast shooting. They lend themselves to faster reloads in a drive shoot too. Are you planning to scop ethe rifle? My vote would be for a Blaser 97 or the 97 Klassik. As for the shotgun aspect I would get a set of combination barrels in .20 ga and 9,3.
