Thoughts on the Beretta 689?
      #55034 - 17/04/06 04:00 PM

I'm considering picking one of these up in 9.3x74 as a second DR. I'm not planning on using it for dangerous game, but rather black bear and boar in the US. Any thoughts on this rifle?

I handled one (but not shot) at the SCI convention in Coffs Harbour here in Australia and found it a really nice U/O double, pointed well, balanced and swung well, and a nice weight for a 9.3mm. Far superior to the U/O 9.3 I currently have.

In Australia they are sold as the SILVER and GOLDEN SABLE.
The golden sable fitted me the best ( naturaly the more expencive) but most of my friends felt the silver model fit them better.
Quite nice rifles anyway.

Yes, Mario B_ brought his 9.3 Gold Sable to Darwin for the National Big Game Rifle Championships last year. I must say that I had never considered a stack-barrel double before, but the quality of that rifle certainly made me think twice. Bloody marvellous! My eldest daughter fell in love with it right away!

No, I didn't buy her one!

I looked at one recently when visiting their NYC store and I must say it is very impressive. I prefer doubles in SxS, but if there was an O/U that could change my views, this one would be it.
I have a Beretta 455 in a .470 and think it is as fine of a double rifle as you will find, so I know they know a bit about making these things.

Beretta calls them Silver and Gold Sables in the US - except that they're only a Gallery gun here. I was considering a Merkel, Chapuis, or Kreighoff but the Beretta was far more reasonable, and I'd rather not drag around all the time a really expensive rifle so it could get damaged while in transit, etc. I'll take that risk when going to Africa, but not flying down to Texas to shoot hogs, etc. I just want one that will fit well, shoot well to 100-150 yards, and stay on face after a thousand rounds (realistically won't shoot it even that much). Also, I shoot a 682 for trap, so I'm used to the gun (sort of). I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a disaster waiting to happen.

Per the Gallery (NYC) the 455 starts at $70K - a bit out of my range. I think the SS06 is more "reasonable" but I didn't ask.

I held one in my hands that was brand new, had the "test target" in the box and all. The only problem with it was...it had chambers that had never been finished and wouldn't chamber rounds. The finish reamers had never touched the barrels. GO FIGURE! How did they shoot that test target???

Pretty nice, otherwise...
