Old Drilling side lever ?Help
      #54952 - 16/04/06 11:12 AM

Needing info about a side lever on a old german nitro proof steel, suhl,merkel/Funk style? drilling with cocker hammers, aged aprox. around 1900-1920?How rare is this and does this help or hurt the value?Rifle caliber 9.3x74r,16x16 shotgun. The one i saw has a lever on the left side and i think it cocks the rifle maybe, because there is also a regular top lever?can someone explain how it works?,do you press down and it engages the rifle like a selector?I have only seen one in a picture ,never actually held,so dont have a clue..Looks way cool..
also did some of the really big bore double rifles have these levers? Are they called ...side lever?... and the ones on bottom that open the action are called bottom lever?Does anyone have a picture of one?i cant find any info nowhere..I have seen a J.D.Dougalls Howdah double barrel 577 Pistol with cockers for hunting tigers with a little lever on the side for opening the action...i wish i had one of those If i find a pic i will post it....I know some of you have seen this somewhere Thanks in adva :

The side lever cocking is the best system, in my opinion. You simply press down on the side lever until it cocks the rifle. In this system the back trigger is the usual rifle trigger (most drillings use the front trigger), and cocking selects the trigger for rifle. Sauer and Merkel used this system a lot prior to WWII.

Another nice feature is that you can uncock it by simply holding the lever all the way down and pulling the trigger, then let the lever up slowly.

I saw that same drilling, but I think they are not sure what they have, and it is probably a 9,3X72R. That needs to be determined and in no uncertain terms. Being an older gun, it may be loose, also. If it is a 9,3X74R and still on face, it would be a fun and useful combination.

I'd also check that it's not 9.3 x 72 or one of the other
9.3 x 7? cartridges from that era.

A lot of them were made.

I have a drilling that I bought from luv2safari in 9.3x72r. It's fun to shoot and I did use it for whitetails on my farm last year. It's a under lever design, and the top lever engages the rifle barrel for the right side hammer. I just love the old girl.

Bear...

I went back and looked at that drilling again. I can almost promise you that it isn't a 9,3X74R, and whoever appraised the gun didn't know from shit regarding drillings.

It is a side lever opening gun with a top lever selector for the rifle barrel and is pretty used up. The gun is worth $700.00, TOPS, in my opinion, and may be a money pit/wall hanger. The seller is right...he don't know nuttin 'bout drllningings.
