Are "jumping" Chinese carp good to eat?

I shall be spending the PAssover weekend with a good friend and his family and we may go out fishing on the Illinois RIver which has been infested with escaped Chinese "jumping" carp. My friend assures me that it would be no problem to just go towards where they hide in the river and come away with a car load of the fish. I wonder if they are good eating and if someone has any recipe suggestions for them?

In my opinion, Carp are only good for planking.

We have a recipe we use over here for Carp.

Put a large pan of water on to boil.

Scale and Gut the fish, of course washing out the insides.

Stuff the insides with Onions, herbs etc.

When the water is CLOSE to boiling, put a half brick
in the bottom to stop the water boiling (over).

Put the carp in and let them cook slowly in the near boiling water.

After about 1/2 an hour, tip out the water and the carp
and eat the brick !!!

PS - I think the above will give you an idea of what Carp taste like !

We have an age old recipe for carp in the Soutern US. From my lovely North Carolina wife:

Gut the carp and scale it;

In a baking pan, coat th bottom with a "cow dab" (meadow muffin, road apple, etc)

Stuff the carp with cow dab.

wCoat the carp with coe dab.

Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.

Remove from oven.

Scrape cow dab off of carp and scoop from inside.

Throw away carp. Eat cow dab.

Maybe it's a dumb question, but why is it that carp taste bad? What do they eat?

I think it is because they are "bottom feeders" and stir up
the mud looking for food that the flesh tastes very muddy.

I have easten Carp and you can do so, especially from
"cleaner" streams / rivers etc. I just don't think it's
that nice anyway !!!

I'd eat it in a Survival situation though.

Someone else may be able to add more light on your question.

It's been my experience that carp taken from ponds and lakes taste very muddy and "fishy". They're also quite boney. They are fun to catch though.

Where I live we can only take carp by either fishing, or also with archery equipment or also a spear. They are fun with a bow.

The biggest one I ever caught while fishing weighed 28 pounds. I've seen photos of some caught that weighed in at over 40 pounds.
