Ruger #1 forend mod....
      #5448 - 06/12/03 12:07 PM

Greetings,

I've decided to install one of the NECG escutcheons in the Alexander Henry forend of my Ruger.

Anybody have experience doing this?

I'm going to start drilling and fitting next week and I'll post my trials and tribulations upon completion.

-Holmes

What does this item accomplish? Is it a decorative thing or utilitarian? I'm interested especially if it has to do with refining accuracy.

I'll be watching this thread...

Unless your No.1 is suffering accuracy problems, don't waste the money to get the unnecessary stuff put on it. The culprit to the accuracy with the Ruger was that the hanger bolt(fore arm bolt that attaches the fore arm) used to be too long and would impact on the barrel and cause undue upward pressure. The easy and cheap fix would find a rubber or fiber washer that is thick enough to keep the bolt from touching the barrel. That way you can spend the money on more ammo and components.

I just got the washer today at the local hardware store (.29 cents!) and a second washer in case the first one isn't quite enough. But it was too late in the day to go out and do any firing to test it out

I'll definitely give you an update, wish me luck!

I could see a really faint mark on the barrel where the screw looks like it went thru too far and touched the barrel... Is this where the problem lies? That may be my biggest problem?

Any time that hanger bolt is touching the barrel, it does no good at all. All the mod does is to alleviate that problem. The barrel is now practically free floating without the undue upward push. Good luck.

Greetings 458,

The escutcheon cover is simply a cosmetic modification that covers the hole where you access the hangar screw. It's a two piece device that is countersunk into the forearm and has a flush removeable screw cover.

It requires drilling the countersink, polishing the escutcheon after forearm fitment, and blueing the unit. The finished product is quite attractive but serves no other function.

475 is correct regarding the washer trick. I prefer rubber O rings as they fill the space better and stay on the screw easily during disassembly. I use automotive air conditioning O rings available at any well stocked auto parts house.

Think of the washer/O ring trick as an isolator, not to be confused with a variable tension set-up like the Hicks Accurizer.

Quite honestly, to isolate the hangar screw, I am currently more inclined to remove some length from the screw. Usually taking off 1-2 threads does the trick.

I've had folks tell me that shortening the screw can't work as well as using a pliable insulator as it does nothing to absorb harmonics like a washer or O ring would. I'm not sure this is a valid argument given the design of the #1 hangar and its relationship to the barrel and the stock.

Good luck with your rifle and let us know what kind of results you find.

I've been trying to get some decent pics lately with my inexpensive digital and it's pretty lame with regard to macro and indoor work. The pics aren't worth posting so far.

A friend has a hot rod digital and I'll be seeing him this weekend so I'll bum his camera and get some shots of the O ring deal and the S&K rings that I'm really impressed with.

Welcome back.... you survived holiday

well... sort of survived.... hit a tree on monday (the first day out!!!) and my knee is a serious mess.

gotta go see the othopedic next month... oh joy!

i also get to pick up my new trap-gun this afternoon... which I'm very much looking forward to. of the 3 guns I've bought this year, thus far the No. 1 is the only one I've seen!!!

my new mauser is in Kansas City getting a safety, hoping to pick it up in a week or two...

UPDATE...

I just finished shooting this afternoon in my little range behind the house. I tried the .29 cent rubber O-ring trick and tweaked the powder charge on the load I've been working with a bit too in the process...

550gr Woodleigh Weldcore SN @ 1825fps (I'm not looking for maximum, just accurate - this is plenty for ANY North American game!) turned in a 50 yard group off the bench...

Center to Center measured with my dial caliper = .45"

To say I'm pleased would be an understatement!

Thanks guys, I've got more tinkering I want to do, but this is phenomenal to me for a heavy caliber rifle. Though Elmer Keith said many times that his two #1's (in .375 H&H and in .458 Win) were the most accurate rifles he owned -both turning in "one ragged hole at 100 yards" with factory 500gr ammo.

Hey dude, I was just wondering if you were able to do anything about your No.1! It's nice to see that you got good results with a simple mod. Looks like you don't have to do a chamber cast after all. Ya done me proud.

Yes! I'm very pleased with it and will probably just work with this load now awhile. Experiment with various ranges, etc. I'll try other stuff too, but at least I know now there's ONE load that just sings in it!

Thanks!
