Accuracy O/U vs SxS ?
      #54263 - 06/04/06 01:24 PM

I am most naturally attracted to SxS guns (rifles & shotguns), but is there an advantage in terms of accuracy? I'm considering buying a medium bore(7x57R) double rifle. Your thoughts appreciated?

No difference from what I have seen.

I think it would come down to who regulated the gun
and how well it has been done.

Remember small bore doubles can be harder to get to shoot
than large bore doubles - or are more temperamental !

Buy what feels right for you.

Have owned about an equal number of both however the O/U's largest caliber was 9.3x74R, SS 470NE. I find I SHOOT the O/U better than the SS. Have no idea why, I just do better offhand AND from bench with O/U. Maybe because all my shotguns are O/U's however i'm just a mediocre shotgun shot. I find it easier to mount a scope on the O/U and I do like to use a scope. Most O/U's i've seen the regulation problems are easier and USUALLY you only have to deal with vertical dispersion rather than horizontal AND vertical.

Arizona,
I own a Krieghoff double rifle (ss) with a set of 7x65R barrels. When I shot it with the factory loads the gun was regulated for I was less than impressed. Even though the Krieghoff allows regulation side to side on this set of barrels I wasn't able to get it right.
I don't handload so I couldn't do anything myself with it. I called Superior Ammo and they worked up a load for my gun.
I have to admit the gun now is a tack driver. It's capable of the same accuracy as any of my bolt guns. The gun now shoots as well as I'm capable of. I really like it a lot. The extra weight of it was worth carrying as I have a ball hunting with it.

500,

Why would the small bores be more tempermental?

AZ,

I have had great service out of small bore double rifles.

I recommend you read this thread from a few months ago:

Talking accuracy, it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
Both are capable of very good accuracy.

My Lajot o/u 9,3X74r is amazingly accurate with factory Sellier & Bellot ammo, and does OK with RWS, not quite as well with Norma...

The point is, that AMMO can deternime how any rifle shoots, and may give a false result of the actual inherent accuracy of a given rifle. Double rifles/double so...

o/u or sxs...I find no difference.
