Typical plains game range???

At what range is most plains game taken in South Africa? I have been working on a new 300 H&H project but the news that ruger is introducing a no 1 in 9.3x74r has me thinking that it would make a great plains game gun out to 250yds with woodleigh's new 250gr pp, and 286gr in close.

If you mean in the bushveld of South Africa - you should work on the average shot (if there is such a thing) as between about 75-150 yards but if you're referring to highveld or desert shooting etc it would be considerably further. A good PH won't ever expect you to take a shot you're uncomfortable with but if you are comfortable with a 400+ yard shot,

you might get the occasional opportunity.

Steve has pretty much hit the nail on the head. My personal experience has been that 95% of the animals I've taken in South Africa have been shot at ranges between 100 - 225 yards, and most of those were under 150 yards. The longest shots I've ever taken on unwounded game were on a Blesbok (@375 yards), and a Common Reedbuck (@ 350 yards).

The longest shots I've had in RSA have been on mountain reedbuck, vaal rhebok, and eland, all at a little over 200 yds.

I usually sight in my 300 Win. Mag. for 250 yds. for all purposes, including African plainsgame hunting.

With the 375 H&H and 338 Win. Mag. , I sight in dead-on at 200 yds.

Expect typical 100 yd. shots, and be prepared for 200........
