Ruger 416
      #53676 - 30/03/06 03:21 PM

New to this site, great forum! I love big bores, been shooting a 375 for years. Thinking about getting a 416 Rigby, is the Ruger M77 a good way to go?

Arizona, welcome to the best forum on the web.

I bought a Ruger 77 in 416 Rigby about two years ago, and love it. I haven't had it blooded in Africa yet. So far it's only seen action at the range, and in my back yard getting rid of garden marauding ground hogs. The neighbors don't like it too much when the 416 sounds off at 8 am on a Satuday or Sunday morning, but I'm far enough away from them that I can legally shoot.

Thanks for the welcome. Tell me, do you prefer soft noses or solids for protecting your garden?

I've been using the Woodleigh 400 grain soft points. They've performed flawlessly on my garden raiders. I haven't been able to recover any bullets though, as all shots have been pass throughs.

I'd love to be able to shoot all those rabits in my back yard with my 416 Rem. To many houses close by.

For this type of culling work do you scope the 416 or use iron/open sights?

What do you do in the event of a charge?

The Ruger is absolutely the best rifle for the money available today if you want a 416 Rigby. Many of them shoot extremely well and feed properly right out of the box.

One of my friends needed to have the feeding system worked on a bit and he had the trigger pull cleaned up a bit, but that was about it.

If I bought one of those rifles myself, I'm replace that thin, brick-hard, black recoil pad that Ruger supplies with a 1" Red Pachmayr Decelerator pad, and I'd add Talley detachable rings, a Leupold 1.5-5x VX-III scope, and I'd replace the front sight bead with a bigger white 3/32" bead.

You can get those front beads from New England Custom Guns, and you can get them in various heights to compensate for point-of-impact, since the rear sight is not adjustable for elevation.

The only charge I experienced occurred two years ago. I was out picking some fresh tomatoes, and I heard a rustling in the bushes off to my right. Just then, a huge skunk started waddleing toward me, and I'm quite sure he was intent on causing me bodily harm. A well placed cinder block immediately ended his charge. I called up the local game warden and told him about the charge, and that it occurred in the middle of the afternoon. He came down and collected it, and took it to the lab, where it tested positive for rabies.

AD, I replaced the recoil pad with a red Pachmayer Decelerator Pad, and I replaced the front sight with a red fiber optic one. The rifle fed flawlessly right out of the box, and the trigger pull was set at 3 1/4 pounds, with no creep at all.

Dangerous game, these garden critters!

I used to do a lot of groundhog hunting in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia, but not with a big bore. I'm thinking about a double rifle groundhog hunt. Safer that way, with a quick followup shot!

Curl, when will you learn that if you place the first shot properly, you need not worry about the quick follow up. Every groundhog (a.k.a. meadow grizzly) that I've shot with the 416 has been turned into an instant furry doughnut.

Mike,

I'm glad to hear that you survived the skunk charge without being badly hurt. Maybe you should start packing a handgun for such unexpected situations?

Arizona,

I hunted with Myles McCallum in Zim last year, and he has been using a Ruger M77 in 416 Rigby for quite a few years now. He's very pleased with his Ruger, and has never had any problems with it.

Mike,

Your Penna. groundhogs don't compare to the ones we encounter south of the Mason-Dixon.

Two holes are better than one!!!! We'll convert you yet.

Just use the right bullet at the right velocity, in the proper caliber, and you'll get 2 holes...1 going in, and 1 coming out.

Mike,

Just this afternoon I took delivery of a George Gibbs .450 Nitro Express double.

How 'bout I guide you and back you up on one of these hunts? My rates are reasonable. With your ability I'll have a cake walk, but I'll be there if things really turn to shit!

Curl as backup on a gopher hunt with his new four-fifty...

Hm. Curl, is that where your twelve bore went?

I've noted this elsewhere, but my first blood with my Tolley 500/450 was a skunk. Good shot too, I wanted to immobilize the thing so I shot for it's neck, took the stem of his spine clean off the back of his brain. It left a nice little hollow where the stem used to nestle in there.
Nasty little critter'd shaken it's hind quarters in the general direction of my wife who had our infant daughter in the buggy (the little one loves getting out to the ranch, she also loves long guns...)
The girls ducked behind an old pickup while I came around the side for a love tap.

How's the new rifle Curl?

Tinker,

The 12 bore went largely by accident. I was ambushed all of a sudden! Yes this is a re-investment of proceeds. Money though, not a trade.

I'll give a full report on the Gibbs in due course on the DR forum - with photos, of course. I've had custody of it (and first laid eyes on it) for only about 4 hours, and had to work during some of that time. Just got home and did some close looking. I'm impressed!

BTW the Gibbs never made it to the internet! Just for now, here's a sneak preview - a compilation of the photos sent to me to buy it.

George Gibbs .450NE

Sorry for the hijack, guys. Go back to hunting in the garden with a .416 Ruger.

Mike, Cpt Curl, AD, ErikD, Tinker

Thanks to all of you for the input and Hijack. I learned several things: (1) The Ruger M77 in 416 Rigby is a good way to go. (2) Gardening is much more dangerous than I believed,(3) This is a great website, you guys know what you are talking about and (4) I think most of you are as SICK as I am, I'm going to enjoy this!

Arizona,

I didn't mind my manners. WELCOME TO NITROEXPRESS.COM!

This is a great site. There's none better. We're all sick as hell.

Take my advice: Stay here on the Big Bore forum. It's safe here. If you wander over to the Double Rifle forum you will find out what real sickness is all about.

Best,

Yes, a lot of us are sick. But thankfully, we've found the cure....NitroExpress. The cure does take quite a while though, so you better plan on being here for a long time.

Curl, what time of year would you suggest. I want to make sure the area is historicly good for the time frame you'll suggest. I want to make sure you're not going to just take my money and then take me for a walk in unproductive territory.

I like the illness.

I'm even getting a bit more accustomed to the treatments. On that topic, are you guys having the same kind of issues I am with snorting those pale green lines of Varget?
My nose has been stinging for weeks and whenever I sneeze I blow another window out of this old Victorian house...

I've been following Marrakai's directions to the letter, chopping the Varget with the sharpened edge of a Bowie and snarking the stuff through a porcupine quill.
Should I try reducing the charge somewhat?
