The Best Double Rifle Forum
      #53429 - 28/03/06 08:38 AM

The Nitro Express.com Double Rifle Forum is way ahead of others on the web IMO.
We now have so many highly experienced members with a broad knowledge on doubles.
I see there was a question recently on another site regarding a Raick Freres double where the poster was seeking information on the maker and despite the huge membership nobody could provide any first hand info.

Now if that question had been asked on this forum the guy would have been able to find out some details on that maker as I know for sure that at least one member here has owned, used and handled double rifles of that make.

You are spot on.

I know of at least 3 Raike Ferres DR's in Australia,
I think in 470, 405 Win and ?. A couple of articles
in magazines are also available.

500,
Yes, and there are (or were) a couple of others as well, here in Oz.
The rifle in question was supposed to be a 300 Sherwood, and well it may have been.
However, European doubles are often a little vague regarding the actual chambering and I would have been wanting to obtain a photo or details of all the barrel stampings/engravings before believing that the rifle truely was chambered for that cartridge.

I agree with 4seventy. I have found no forum anywhere that matches NE.com for discussons of double rifles.

It's a voluntary association, and this gathering is where I come to exchange information and experiences with double rifles.

I remember when I first discovered NE.com. It was by chance when doing a Google search in regard to a double rifle issue. During my "lurking" period I read every prior post on the forum so that I would be up to speed on what had been discussed to that date. Then I felt confident to join in.

I wish I had been aware of the forum at its inception. Over the long run I certainly intend to maintain my loyalty here.

Agreed, its the best, no contest.

Nitro gave us a great base, and the quality of the participants really makes it what it is. When I am on many other forums I think, "Wow these guys need parental supervision..." Nice to have a good, friendly and informative forum!

Thanks everyone!: cool:

This is easily the best forum for double rifle knowledge. Not only are the most knowledgable people here, but they are quite helpful and tolerant of questions from idiots like me, and there is no snobbish behavior whatsoever.

Here you can send a private message to anyone for more information, whereas on some forums if you try that they will act like you peed on their carpet.

Plus the members are mostly Aussies and Americans, who happen to be my favorite people on earth.

As I said on the other thread, the members vast collective experience and store of knowledge make up these forums. Daily I am astounded by the intricate detail and knowledge some of the more experienced members can contribute. As we add additional features to the site I learn a lot too.

This site wouldn't exit if I was not enjoying it too.

No doubt about this at all. Australia has some of the most advanced collectors of double rifles in the world and is, perhaps, the biggest current home to doubles of the Raj era. And this forum has some of the most knowledgeable double rifle owners and experts.

I agree with Mehulkamdar! Austrailia probably has more ventage Double rifles than any other country in the world today. This translates into a larger group of collectors, than any other place. This is the reason for the, seemingly, umlimited store of knowledge here on Ntro Express.com, on the history of the old Britt maker's products.

I have been interested in double rifles all my life, since the first one I ever touched, at the age of six years, and I'm 69 yrs old. I've read everything I could get my hands on since, but untill 15, or 20 yrs ago, there was precious little available in the USA pertaining to double rifles, and fewer people who knew anything about them. This still holds today in many ways. Even very well known gunsmiths, and custom gun dealers are, in a word, "CONFUSED", when it comes to the care and feeding of double rifles.

The USA is a Lever action society, which jumped from lever to bolt action. This is because people in the USA did not have the INDIA, and AFRICA connection that the Britt soldiers had. There was no need for any type rifle, for North American game, other than what our armies used . The old 45-70, the 30-40 Krieg, the 30-06, then the 308 (7.62 NATO), and finally the 223. were all the progression needed for North America.

Double rifles were not needed, and since they were so expensive, and required unknown skills to build, they never became a household discussion in America. I would say no more than 1% of Americans has even ever seen a double rifle, much less held, or shot one! I learn something with almost every post I read here, and I've been involved with double rifles for a very long time. It isn't any wonder that those who have only begun to think DOUBLE RIFLE, can learn loads from this web-site!

Many of the very knowledgable people who post here are also posters on AR, came here from AR, and to AR from HA, before that. I still post in both places, as well as HA once in a while.

The friendly posting here is a mirror emage of AR, 7, or8 yrs ago. Many of us migrated to AR, to get away from the venom of other web-sites. It seems most of the problems at AR are caused by those who have been there for only a short time, and once a cancer starts to grow, it gets worse by the day. I prediict it will happen here as well, but I hope I'm wrong.

Mac,

I don't think the community here will allow this site to degrade as you have predicted.

I think there are many here with a firm will to keep things on a high plane. I don't know what AR was like 7 or 8 years ago and hardly know what is like now. I do remember some time back when AR did a re-vamp or something and a lot of their people came over here. They were required to maintain a proper tone. I think one or two were escorted out the door when they didn't.

Let's all make sure that this prediction does not come true.

I feel this forum is truly unique and enjoyable for many reasons IMHO-

1-A wonderful learning atmosphere from great folks who have "been there done that". No room for personal macho when your learning from more knowledgible persons whose hunting activities you wish to emulate. .
2- The forum members are a unique subset of the general hunting population-its BEST SEGMENT. They have the means to hunt with the best sports weaponry worldwide, hunt Dangerous Game, and the ability to communicate their experiences effectively. NO emotional rednecks here that I have noted.
3- Respect for each others opinion is genuine and no ad hominem attacks occur.Poorly justified conclusions-yes, but individuals-NO.That is how it should be.And Forum leaders have the patience of the biblical JOB when asked for the 50th time what first Double to buy!

Forum moderators et al--Thanks for sweating the details and making the forum what it is!!!

It is all of you that make this great!!! This is a place where you can come and learn and share. I have never found this group one to be sarcastic or snide and I apriciate that. We all can learn from others and here we share and learn. What I like best about this place is that I feel we are all friends and can talk and express our ideas.

I agree with all of you guys.
The forum is great and the best I ever saw on the web on any subject.
In reply to Dugaboy, I would say that if Australia has the best vintage double rifle population, Europe and France in particular probably have the highest number of double rifles per hunter.
Due to the explosion of wild boar hunting in the last 20 years, there probably are more doubles than bolt actions in France today. In the village I come from (population 300), there are about 5 or 6 hunters. I believe that 4 of them have at least one double. Bear in mind that they are all blue collar types, and that the price of a vintage double is just way beyond their means, not to mention that vintage guns in France are very rare, as they disappeared one way or tthe other in WWII. So they all have a Chapuis, Demas, Valmet or Merkel (and by the way they are just about 2/3 price compared to here). I also have to add that none of them are sophisticated shooters, reloaders, etc... This is partly due to the fact that in a driven hunt, shots are usually within 40 yards, and therefore accuracy is not a huge deal.
in the 80s, the favorite weapon for boar was the good old shotgun equipped with Brenneke slugs. However, they are not nearly as good as a 9.3x74 because they tend to bounce off the tree trunks as well as off the boars skulls. Not a good behavior!

Welcome Wildcattle.

I agree totally with your observations. When I lived in France I was amazed by the sheer number of double rifles being used for battue. Also as you said they are significantly cheaper there (thats where I bought mine! )

A+

That is the way to keep things on an even keel. If folks do not abide by the rules, there SHOULD be consequences. Still there are those who venture in, and start something that gets quickly out of hand, if something isn't placed between them, amd the rank, and file members. Some folks are masters at this, and enjoy a straw-man crap fest, and once people get angry, the damage is done, sometimes to an irrepairable extent. That is what happened at AR, with a few people with the availability of computers banks, to post from several different Web addresses, under several screen names. These are somtimes hard to detect, before they do the damage!

I agree this is a great place, and has never shown a tendency to go wild. I, for one, hope it stays that way!

NitroExpress and AR do provide a wealth of valuable information and experiences. As much I enjoy the exchange of information, the real pleasure for me has been the opportunity to meet, socialize and hunt with wonderful folks that I would have never known existed had it not been for these forums.

Some of these people I have never met in person, yet we communicate with each other as if we were old friends! Everyone that I have met from NitroExpress and AR forum have been of the very best character. I look forward to getting to visit or share a campfire with these fine folks whenever possible.
The Double Rifle Shooters Society began as a direct result of a hunt put together by Mac at Camp Cooley Ranch in Texas.
Today the DRSS has dozens of proud members.

I thank each of you for enriching my life!

I guess the only possible better forum for double rifles would be one called
Doublerifle.com. Hmmmm, come to think of it, I own that domain name!

Welcome, Martin!

I've learned much of what I know about double rifles right here. Although I had owned several double rifles, I didn't know a lot about the breed, until I found NE a while ago. The membership here is THE clearinghouse for DR information!

...looking forward to our meeting and some pig hunting...
