Hello,
I've been going round and round with trying to figure out what to do about a custom 300 H&H bolt rifle and it occured to me that a Ruger No 1 would be really neat in 300 H$H for an upcoming trip to SOuth Africa for plains game. It also seems like it will cost a bit less than a custom bolt gun. Any suggestions on who to talk to about building one?
Looking for something classic, blue, nice walnut, iron express sights for those 220 grainers, along with scope mounts, bbl band, etc...
Also, does it make a difference whether you start with a tropical or a smaller model?
Thanks,
Benny

Where are you located? U.S.? Canada? Australia? Germany?
Plenty of great gunsmiths and gunmakers that can turn a No.1 into whatever it is you desire.

There are a bunch of custom gunmakers here in the USA that build fine No.1's. Prices can go from mild to wild, depending on what you want.
Carolina Precision appears to be a well trusted name in building and tuning a no-frills tack-driving No.1.
Names like Mark Stratton, Steven Dodd Hughes, and others can turn a factory No.1 into an exquisite piece of highly functional art.
I believe both Mark Stratton and SDH post here.

Try Mark Penrod, Penrod Precision 260-982-8385. I'm looking for a No.1-S to have Mark rebarrel to 300 H&H, I like the 26" barrel length and forend as well as the sights on the 1-S configeration. It may take a while to find a No. 1-S, never was a good seller for Ruger. Good luck!

Your project may not require a new barrel. Why not order a Ruger #1 in 30-06, ream the chamber to 300 H&H and replace the extractor?

thanks for the replies gentlemen. i've changed my mind on the 300 H&H. will be picking up a no 1 sporter in 7x57. think it will work well for the hunting i will be doing. nothing bigger than gemsbok, and mostly smaller species like impala and whitetails in my neck of the woods.

7mm Mauser is a great round as well but personally I would want something a little bigger for Gemsbok.
