30R Blaser - Need Help!
      #52518 - 16/03/06 03:40 AM

This may sound strange coming from me, but I need information on the 30R Blaser cartridge. In particular, I need cartridge dimensions.

Also, if anybody has any empty cases they want rid of, I may have a use for them. I would certainly like to have several in hand in the short term for experimental purposes. I may need more, depending on the success of my experiments.

I'll make clear the nature of my interest and experiments in due course. A clue: I won't be using them in a 30R Blaser.

I'm posting this on several forums. Please excuse the repetition.

Thanks,
Curl

What a great idea!
I've never seen wind-chimes made out of 30R Blah-zer cases, but I imagine they'll work fine!

Wind chimes would be a nice idea, but the sound I anticipate is much louder than a tinkle in the breeze!

If this comes to fruition they will remain 30R Blaser only by headstamp but not by form.

Marrakai,

Let me relieve some of the suspense.

I think the 30R Blaser is a good candidate for conversion to .400/.360 Westley Richards. The size at the head is really close, the rim isn't too large, and it's only about 0.050" short of the nominal length of the WR cartridge.

This idea developed from studying dimension data from Cartridges of the World, and it may not work at all. I don't yet have the .400/.360 WR in hand, but should have it today. Further, I've never laid eyes on a 30R Blaser case. I'll know more about the Westley after a chamber cast and bore slug.

Huntington lists RWS cases in 30R Blaser a damn sight cheaper than their Bertram in .400/.360 WR. So far I'm not impressed with Bertram's fidelity to dimensions. If the RWS will work, that's going to be my mainstay.

I won't be using an ultra-modern bullet zipper. It's a pure-blood Westley Richards Farquharson (take-down model) made in 1897:

Now you know as much as I know about this project. I haven't seen the rifle yet, only the pictures. Today it will come on a brown truck, and I'll either be delighted or non-plussed. I think it's a peach. Not a double this time, but surely a Pommie classic!

In the meantime, your vast knowledge of loading and cartridge adaptation would be welcome. Maybe you already have a solution for the .400/.360 WR.

Best regards,
Curl

Did you ever determine whether the 30R Blaser would work? I am in the process of trading for a 400/360 WR similar to yours, so I am highly interested in finding a source for brass.

I do not know if this helps but here is .30R Blaser dimensions in millimeters:

And this is .400/.360 WR

No I did not.

This story finished unhappily. The rifle arrived, but its bore was gone. With permission of the seller I tried some loads in it but could get no accuracy whatever. It needed a new barrel. Since the deal was expressly conditioned on satisfactory condition and accuracy, the rifle went back to the seller.

My Farquharson quest was satisfied a few years later with a nearly perfect .450/.400 3-1/4" NE Army & Navy you can see here:

Army & Navy CSL Farquharson - .450/.400 3.25" NE

Yes, that is a bittersweet story. I am glad you found such a nice Farquharson to console your anguish.

I am thinking that the 9.3x74R is the most likely candidate for donor brass. Most (but not all) sources state that the .400/.360 has a base diameter of .470": this is similar to the 9.3. Obviously, a chamber cast, when the rifle is in hand, will tell the story.

Where did you obtain the ammo you used to test fire the Westley Richards?

I formed brass from 9.3x74R. Trouble is, the WR version of the .400/.360 has a thicker rim (about 0.063"), so headspace is problematic. There's not enough shoulder to do the job. That's why I was looking for another cartridge with a thicker rim and compatible dimensions otherwise.

For the Purdey version of the .400/.360 the 9.3x74R is just fine. I'm currently doing that conversion for a nice DR to recently come into the fold. I'm planning a report on this DR in the near future after a little more range time and some photography.
