Those 788s had a reputation for accuracy.

Have to say the model 74 Sharps. It had the greatest impact on westword expansion. Arguably it's the most accurate rifle evermade. After that would be Colts, Winchesters and Marlins.

Has to be the Pennsylvania rifle. Flint lock, .40 to .60 caliber, 40 to 50 inch rifled barrel, full hardwood stock, open sights. No other country found it necessary to develop and then use this weapon and it served very well indeed from about 1760 to about 1840, performing some truly amazing tasks well and reliably. Some were issued to the British ranging units in the French and Indian War and the fur trappers of the far west depended on them to keep their bellies full and their topknots secure. Sure, 3 to 5 minutes of angle is no big deal now, but back then, compared with smoothbore fowlers and military muskets, the long rifle was a wonder. Fliintlocks are much more reliable than most people realize; they can be fired upside down and even in the rain if some care is taken with the pan, and the locks are not nearly as delicate as they seem.

And then the genius Browning invented the 1911 pistol.

Well this is an interesting thread, to say the least. How about the M-1 Grand from The Springfield Armory? Ok John Grand was Canadian not matter. The rifle was so good that the Federal Goverment still has some 2 to 4 million of them still in storage. Never shot. They even sell some to us peons from time to time. Its been 40 or so years since army when to the Mattel. They keep the M-1 at great expense, in storage, when almost every thing else goes to the scrap metal dealers. Says a lot about a rifle.

From an European perspective:
revolver - Colt SAA
pistol - Glock (sorry, I know...)
rifle - Winchester lever action
shotgun - Mossberg pump

(I have all of them except Mossberg)

Kind regards,

For what? Hunting? Shooting? Military? Historical?

In order above:

30-06 Spring field.

22 rim fire in a winchester pump gun.

30-06 Spring field in a Spring field bolt or M1 Grand.

Colt 45 and Hawkins Muzzleloader.

there's a lot of good replies here.....some I would have never thought of but for sure the Colt SAA, the Winchester levers and M-70, the Browning auto shotgun and the Savage 99 should not be dismissed from the list.

I really laughed at 500 grains comment on the Rem 788 and the Savage 110....great line. Thanks Dan

Further historic developements that are not mentioned is the Smith & Wesson revolvers and the Marlin 45-70 lever gun specifically designed for Cape Bufflo.

now.....I'll duck quietly away from this thread.
