Would you use your double as a mountain rifle?
      #5201 - 26/11/03 10:33 PM

Taking the double fanaticism to an extreme - would you use your double as a mountain rifle?

Now some assumptions. Lets assume the rifle is in a suitable calibre. Say anything from 7x65R to a .375 Flanged. Lets say a lighter bullet load regulates in it and shoots flat enough. That either the shooter is good with open sights or it is scoped. It is reasonably light weight, say less than 9 lbs.

Would you be happy to carry such a rifle say in the South Island of NZ after tahr or chamois or red stag? Or after mountain goat or big horn ram in North America? Chamois in Europe?

Also have you don't it?

The pursuit of one double gun for the world.

Why use a Double if you can use a Single shot???? I won't use any double in a Mountain hunt I prefer to remove one barrel.

470

Send me your barrels and I will put it on the Band Saw for you.

I would and have taken my 9.3x74R Deer and Moose hunting but it does lack the 300 yard range needed where I hunt in the Mountains, above timberline.

I would love one of the Merkel single shots in 30 Blaser to hunt with. Then I would not even need a bolt rifle.

High velocity, high pressure cartridges are not recommended for doubles.

What's the differences that allow these really lovely light break open single shots in hot calibres such as 6.5x68R ?

Anyone who can give some info. Thanks.

I don't know why, but I always climb mountains with a single 6.5x57R and it's works real fine with mouflons, fallows, chamois and Ibex. I've 100% of success with this gun.

Have hunted Pigs in NZ with a mate with doubles (+ other types of guns not available in Australia).
A few of them use Doubles in NZ to get practice for Big Game Hunting.

Yes definitely. Either a single shoot Blaser K95 in 6,5x57R., or their dbl S-2 "bergstutzen" in 6,5x57R and .30R.

PS. I know the NitroX refer to Blaser as plastic-fantastic, but even the Space-shuttle have some plastic. I find the Blaser to have good balance and the stock fits me naturally/quick to aim.

Nitro,
To cut what would be a very long description short, the main reason that SOME break action single shot rifles can be chambered for hot cartridges is IMHO.....

The weight saved by using only one barrel instead of two allows for a stronger action design.

Heavy barrel lugs can engage with mating surfaces located either on the sides or within the floor of the action.

The slim profile of the one barrel allows the action to be heavily reinforced on either side of the barrel.
This can reduce flexing at the action bar.

Of course this type of strengthening could be done to a side by side double but would add much ungainly width and weight and turn the rifle into a club.

So long as someone else was going to carry the head, cape and meat out for me, I'd maybe carry a double of up to 9 pounds weight in the mountains.

If I was mountain hunting by myself and had to do all my own carrying out, I would much prefer that the weight was no more than about 7 1/2 pounds including the scope.

Yes I would, and I have. I have used my 450/400 3 1/4" double in Alaska for Caribou and Brown Bear, and in Montana for Black Bear. I have also used my 9,3x74R Chapuis in Montana for Black Bear. The Montana Bear hunts were true backpack hunts in the mountains, no horses. My 9,3 has a scope in QD mounts.

For smaller game, Sheep, Goats, etc I would love to have a 7x65R double rifle.

My 9,3 still regulates good at 200 yards @4"groups RL/RL shooting off the roof of a car ie. no bench. [that is the farthest I have shot it on paper]
If my double did not regulate well at 300 yards I would just sight in the scope for one bbl and use it like a single shot when shooting far off.
I still like the advantage of 2 quick shots, especially in Grizz country.

Yes I would, and I do use one or the other of my doubles to hunt everything, from Jack rabbit, to Grizzly, and love hunting Muledeer in the New Mexico canyon country, with a double! All real rifles have more than one barrel! The double rifle is the only rifle system that is made for only one purpose, HUNTING, all others started life as a war weapon, or for target shooting!

Why not, after all a 404 Jeffrey was used to take the world record mountain sheep in the mountains of Northern BC

Yeah but how big is the mountain that we're shooting at?

You shoot the mountain when you miss the animal.

Got a good chuckle from the "how big a mountain" thing.

Personally, I tend to carry an 8 pound 338 with a McMillan stock and a hardy finish in the tall hills. Not sure I could bring myself to carry a big dollar piece up that kind of hill. Whel loaded with a backpack and camping gear I am probably not to graceful anymore ;>)

In terms of usefulness, I suspect that the 8 pound 9.3x74R double rifle would be equally useful where the ranges are under 200 yards. Would certainly not feel that rifle to be inappropriate for the intruders possible in a remote camp ... like bear.

To me the double rifle has one use and one use only and that is shooting dangerous game at ranges less than 100 yards...It is a close in charge stopper and no more, no less....that is what it is!

Now if one wants to use it to shoot clays then have at it, its all about fun and games I suppose...but I always want the right tool for a specific job..so for Mt. Hunting I will take a 300 H&H with 180 or 200 gr. Noslers...
