What game have you shot on Safari in Africa?

I'm interested in the collective memberships achievements when hunting in Africa.

What game animals have you successfully taken in Africa?

for my part:

Blesbok
Kudu
Gemsbok
Eland
Blue Wildebeest

In other words, I have lots of species left that I can look forward to hunting in the future!

I don't think there's anything wrong with shooting the same animals. I've done a great deal of that myself!

I've considered trying for "one of everything", but I finally gave up on that idea. There are places in Africa that I simply don't want to hunt, and there are a lot of animals that I have no interest in shooting. Besides, the idea of keeping up with the Level of Achievement Award guys gives me a headache!

But I could hunt kudu, eland, sable, roan, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, lion, leopard, and Cape buffalo year after year and never get tired of it...........

Myself I love shooting impala. I love the horns but unless I get a much bigger animal will probably not have many shoulder mounted. As I like flat skins and skull mounts these can still be taken.

I have only taken one warthog, as I have only ever had a chance at one worth taking but I would probably take them each trip. No bushpig yet but I like hunting swine anywhere.

As both of these animals are cheap enough that is not bad.

Only one kudu but I will certainly hunt them again.

And zebra skins make such nice rugs, so the three of them so far is only the start.

I love hunting busbuck so will hunt them again and again as well.

Cape buffalo are a herd animal and a great hunting quarry. Like water buffalo I would hunt them again and again if I am able.

The grand slam award ideas of checking off animals off a list doesn't do anything for me, I'm more there just to hunt.

I'm open for new animals it's just that, like you, I don't want to go everywhere.

If you could only hunt one animal, not a DG, what would it be?

I think it would be Hatrmann's Zebra in Namibia or Kudu. Both are very challenging if done on foot in the Mountains.

Boy Mick, that's a tough call. I think Kudu would have to top my list too. But, then again, I realy enjoy hunting big Gemsbok Bulls.

Mick,

I just tried and failed with the bongo. I agree to try it once again, not more.

The splendid game which eluded me, either being smarter than me or out of quota is the WATERBUCK.
I am really wondering if I'll get one in fair chase circumstances?

I feel happy for I hunted some interesting animals and nonetheless I still have to consider to hunt real paradises like Zim, Tanz, Zam and Botswana. No smal achievement that keeping paradisicac game countries in perspectives.

Considering shooting the same games again, my opinions are mitigated.
Warthog, baboon and buff : YES
Hartebeest, and Waterbuck (not shot yet) : NO for they are too......(not stupid) .......but confident.
For other games, I think, only if their trophies is indeed far better than the ones I got.
Rather than shooting the same games again, I prefer to hunt in another country, almost the same species but another subspecies, along with the joy of discovering a different country and different people.

Mickey, if I could only hunt one species of non-dangerous African big game, I'd go with kudu. I'm a born and bred western elk hunter, and kudu have always reminded me of Africa's version of elk.

My second pick would be eland.........

Gents,

This is kind of interesting because it shows what safari means to different people and what their different expectations may be for their own adventures. To me it is becoming clear that I'm kind of a collector at least within my budgetary restraints and if in most cases I can't kill a bigger trophy of a particular species than I have shot before I'm not interested in taking it. This is witnessed by my '03 safari in Tanzania where I shot no buffalo when I had 3 on license and multiple chances to shoot them. Took some crap for that one on AR. On the other hand I think I could be pretty happy if I could organize a trophy elephant or leopard hunt every year. With these 2 species as long as it was a mature male I would not care so much about the trophy quality. The experience itself would be reward enough.

Here's my list:

Southern Impala
Common Reedbuck
Common Waterbuck
Southern Greater Kudu
East African Greater Kudu
Gemsbok
Nyasa Wildebeest
Lichtenstein's Hartebeest
Red Hartebeest
Warthog
Steenbok
Burchell's Zebra
Hartmann's Zebra
Hippopotamus
Cape Buffalo
Lion
Leopard
Elephant

And I, unlike some of you guys, definitely DO want one of each!

But only one plains game animal for the rest of my life?

Keeping it affordable (i.e., ruling out the exotics, like the Lord Derby's eland, mountain nyala, sitatunga and bongo), I would have to agree that the southern greater kudu would be the one.

In reply to:

I have the same philosophy when trophy hunting.

A friend of mine has the same outlook and has passed on Stone Sheep that most hunters would shoot.
