What caliber of double rifle to buy?
      #5164 - 25/11/03 06:56 AM

I thought this might be a fun post. Assume you are going to buy a double rifle, but what caliber would you buy if:

1. You hunted in North America,

2. You hunted in Europe,

or

3. You hunted in Africa.

You might answer with the same caliber for all three, but you can answer with 3 different ones.

1. & 2. plus 2.5. Australia

9.3x74R, or .375 H&H Flanged Magnum

3. .500/.416 NE

Probably the same double rifle with two barrel sets plus a 20g set. Both rifle barrels setup for scopes and with a removable recoil dampener in the stock for the .416.

One gun case for the world.

A double in 7x65, 400-350, and 470, just about covers everything so long as the 7 and the 35 are scoped.
Actually that's what I use now so wouldn't need to buy them.

But seeing that you want me to buy another one I guess it would have to be a sidelock 600.
Who's paying for it by the way?

How about these three.

303 Watson Bros
369 Purdey
500/465 Holland & Holland

Much more fun and you can wear a Beret.

For North America I'll get a 375 Flanged M.
For Europe I don't change my 9.3x74R.
And I'll return to Africa with a 470NE

That's perfect. Don't you???

I would be fine with just one caliber, the .500/.416 and alter bullet weight depending on game.

I agree with all of you.
NitroX, it would be nice if I could afford a Double Rifle with 3 barrel sets as you suggest. As long as I had a spare set of Locks and Strikers for that rifle.
As RobertD says you could always regulate your one Double with 2 or 3 different weights of Loads and have a 20g barrel for birds.
Mick, Just out of curiousity, what yardage are the Express Sight leaves marked on your 303 Watson Bros Double Rifle? What is the farthest you have shot it accurately? As a Double Rifle, is it accurate at 250 yards? I understand that the old hunters claim that every animal in the world has been taken with that caliber.
Best Regards, Wes.

For 1 & 2, I don't see a difference off any signifience, the 400 NE

For 3, a 470 NE unless elephant is on the menue, then 577NE

I've always wanted a boxlock 450/400.

This is a fun post......since drams are free I would take:

1. North America- A 45-70 double. It would be a great round for bears, elk or deer in the timber.

2. Europe- 9.3x74R

3. Africa- 470

This would be a nice Christmas tio !!

Ross Seyfried of Guns and Ammo, probably about 10 years ago, had an article done on One Gun for All Game.

It was a Ruger Red Label frame, 20 guage I think. Too bad I dont remember the rest of the particulars about it. I *think* one barrel was a 9.3x74 and the lower barrel was a .416 Rigby, but not sure.

Crazyquik,
Welcome, and good to have you here.
That article on the Ruger Red Label, does anyone have it?
I would very much like to read it.

I'd love to read the article if you can find it.
That said, I do know what a pain it can be to hunt through piles of shooting mags looking for a specific story.

...1 + 2 = scoped 9.3x74r + extra 20ga. barrels for everything (unless hunting largest of dg, then extra non-scoped .470ne barrels)...

...just a neophyte's ho...
