What's with those Berets?
      #5153 - 24/11/03 03:40 PM

I've been reading a book by John Kingsley-Heath about African Hunting in the '50's, 60's and 70's. It has allot of pictures of other PH's and Clients and almost all of them are wearing Berets. I remember a Capstick Video where he says he liked Berets also.

What's with that?

Anybody know?

I can't say as I don't really know. Perhaps it's a throwback to the military days of the 50's, and 60's when a lot of British troops & special forces wore the beret as part of their everyday uniform. For myself, I'd rather wear an old, beat up baseball cap-much better for keeping the sun off my forehead, and shades the eyes.

A book? I'm pretty sure it is his only book. I thought you didn't need to learn anything?

What else does the chic hunter wear when he wishes to hunt with panache?!

I wouldn't be seen dead without a beret in Africa.

Mickey,

Watch what you say about people wearing berets. Alot of SF units still wear them
and damn proud of it, whatever colour - red, green or Sandy Beige.

QUOTE: That's why I asked. Are they a macho thing or do they serve a purpose? :UNQUOTE

I believe they are only a macho fasion statement, for the most part! The one worn by Capstick had a metel madalion on it that reflected flashes of light like a signal mirror! Berets do not shade the eyes, so I don't know why anyone would want to wear one to hunt in!

I've always hunted before in a Baseball type cap, but have just had cancer surgery, and have been advised to wear a broad brimmed hat, and long sleeves from now on! I have my Dad's Stetson 5X beaver safari hat, with a real zebra hat band, and turned down fore, and aft, like Stuart Granger's, in "king Solomon's Mines"! Now I guess I'll be ridiculed for trying to make a fasion statement in the hunting pictures from now on!

Speaking of Stuart Granger, I was reading a book over the weekend where a PH speaks of meeting him all alone in a camp in the bush. It seems Stuart had brought an atractive young companion on safari and she and the PH he hired had took off together, leaving him by himself for, at that point, 3 days.

Apart from the "macho image" it's other advantage is that it can be easily carried either in the shoulder strap of your shirt or your pants pocket. With a hat or cap you are always looking for a place to put it down when not in use.

Even though I joked about them earlier they really are a useless hat. Personally I don't like wearing a hat at all and wear one for its insulation or shade benefits when necessary which a beret doesn't really give much of. Under a hot sun they do not look very useful.

Didn't they start off as a uniform requirement for tank crews and I suppose airborne and special forces adopted them also because they could be squashed up and still worn as Iqbal mentions.

Also some were designed to fit over a small helmet for tank crews.

I think the African hunters wearing one would have done so because maybe they had them from old units or for their 'look' and association with those units.

No. I cant see where they serve any purpose of a hat at all. They do look cool though.

I used to wear one a lot. Held the sweat (it created) and my hair out of my eyes and head from getting pricked by thorns and such. No blockage of vision like some hats do.

I wonder what the locals would say here in Idaho if I rooted around and found one and sported it along?

What colour for hunting?

Not blue!

Red?
Green?
Black?
Sand?

How does a beret stay on? Do they require hair clips to stay on?

A beret is OK for some purposes, and bad for others. Its warmer in cold weather than an Akubra and stays put in the wind. Doesn't snag as you push through scrub. In hot weather it keeps the sun off the bald spot, unfortunately it gives no protection to the ears, neck or face nor does it keep the sun, or rain, out of the eyes.

Note, the common baseball hat doesn't do any better except for keeping the sun off the eyes, the semi-circular cut out at the back becomes a major risk factor for skin cancer (as I found out after having a large one cut off) and the lack of side protection is leading to skin cancers on the ears.

I personally prefer a wide brim hat and one day may even experiment with a pith helmet. But I don't belittle others who make different choices.

The froggy french poofter hat (ROFL) we use to call it in Army Reserve unit. We were affiliated with a Scottish Higland Regiment and wore the Slouch Hat if overseas otherwise the Tam O'Shanter or as the military cut is called The Balmoral Bonnet. Either one (Berret or Tam O'shanter) would not be good for much as far as hunting goes. The baseball cap I wear have a protective flap that covers the ears and neck. Bit like the French Legionnaires hat.

Last sentence, it's called humour. If one is going to wear a beret here without a sweet Parisian frock, ones going to have to have a tough hide.

Same as a manly pith helmet.

I use a broad brimmed wool based hat forcool weather and rain. I bought this gaucho hat in the Andes of Peru. Too hot for Summer. The rabbit skin Akubras for summer.

A pity helmet should be a decent hat. Air can circulate around the scalp. Should be cooler. Getting a usable pith helmet with a chin strap keeps it on. I'm going to try one.

Berets. Yes for those of us with thinning hair or bald patches, a hat can keep one warmer.

If your regiment has one, it can be worn with pride.

From how to wear a French beret. I agree.

Matching your beret to your hairstyle.

Of course Peter Hathaway Capstick is problem the most famous hunter I can think of wearing a beret.

But I'm sure some French hunters probably did as well.

***

If John Wayne could wear a beret, anyone can.

https://i0.wp.com/thedrillmaster.org/wp-...2C267&ssl=1

How to Shape and Fold a Beret
DRILLMASTER JANUARY 9, 2018 ASK DRILLMASTER, DRILL TEAMS, HONOR GUARD, INSTRUCTIONAL LEAVE A COMMENT

How do you shape a beret?

John-Wayne-in-The-Green-Berets
First: Cut out the lining.

Second: Cut the cardboard so that it is just a small arch about 2 or 3 inches across the bottom so that whatever device you wear fits nicely.

Third: Put on your beret and make sure it (the leather band around the bottom) is as parallel to the ground as you can get it with the cardboard centered over your left eye. Make a fold of the material that starts right nest to the cardboard and goes toward your right ear. This fold should not cover any of the area where your device will rest. Tie the ribbon so that the beret fits your head snugly. Some cut the ribbon, others just tuck it under the beret.

Fourth: Take a shower with your new beret on and get it soaking wet with hot water as soon as you enter the shower. Make sure you form it like I explained above while it is wet and the steam is getting to it. Let it drip dry ON YOUR HEAD. Don’t take it off until it is almost completely dry- or completely dry if you can stand it that long. You can also use a mannequin head if you have one.

Fifth: Let it sit flat overnight so that the fold can hang over the side of a table or whatever flat surface it is on to make sure it is totally dry. It should look like the Duke’s beret in the picture above; that picture is the standard.

Now your beret is ready to wear!

Note: some people suggest shaving the beret to get rid of all of the fuzz on it. You can do that, but it tends to look a little strange and sometimes even get a slight shine. Also, if the beret has tiny tab at the top in the middle, cut it off.

The Ribbon
Tie it so that the beret fits snugly on your head and then fold it up underneath the beret. You can cut the excess ribbon, but don’t make it too short to tuck underneath!

Now, Let’s get it folded!
