Ahhhh, the good life. Sitting at home on a bright, sunny late-winter day, a few double guns at hand, a nice fire. . .

Don't mean to overwork you on a nice day but I'm sure we need more pictures (close-ups) and details.

Now back to work .

Funny I see this thread pop up right now.
I have about fourty guns out in a similar fashion right now, I'm cleaning out and moving one of the vaults today. Took a little break from the hard work of wiping down and peeking down the bores of lots and lots of barrels this morning.

Might just have to put a fire in that fireplace too...
I don't have much time to fiddle with photos, but here's one of the tiny Lefaucheux 28b shotgun. It's about a 2/3 size gun, likely made for a child or small woman, signed and addressed with the inventor's name and address on the top rib.

This is one of eleven creatures in the dark arts scenes depicted within the twisted bank ribbon on my Claudin 16b SxS. This gun was set up with Leopold Bernard fine pattern barrels and very dark tiger stripe french walnut.

Enjoy!

banzaibird,

This is a poor photo, handheld camera, a little blurred, but here's a close shot:

I'd hammer in the morning. . .

Unlike the others, this photo wasn't taken today. Sadly, the one in the middle has a new home.

The close-up of the first guns. I guess I must be simply because I really like the the top gun which happens to be the less adorned of the shottguns. Don't get me wrong they are all nice and would be more than happy to have any of them much less all of them.

Of the hammers I have to say I like the one at the bottom of the pic the most. Not sure why, I just do.

Nice guns, all of them.

Tinker,

I don't want to let you out of the praise. Very nice as well.

I think a coffee book of some of these guns would be nice. The over all look then some of the detail as well. Could be a neat project.

Banzai-

Here's another critter from one of the locks on the Claudin 16b double.

I have a few other interesting mid 19th century guns, these ones were handy on my photo hosting site account.
Both of these guns are high grade examples from thier makers with extensive engraving of interesting design, showcase damascus barrels, full island locks, and very pretty wood.
Examples like these are extremely rare, but there's still a lot of value to be found in mid century sporting guns from early in the times of the metallic cartridge.

That Lefaucheux is just amazing too. The damascus pattern in the barrels is goregeous, the metal work all over the gun is beautiful. Double underbites with a 'T' shaped locking bolt, it's good to shoot with stiff black powder loads, the gun is in fantastic unrestored nearly perfect condition.
Mr Lefaucheux had just gotten his new shop set up on 37 Vivian Road in Paris. The facility was mainly built to manufacture pistols. This is one of very, very few sporting guns made by him featuring the later patent locking system, he died during his second year in business at that address.
This is one of the last sporting guns he made although the shop continued to produce shotguns for quite some time into the twentieth century after his death.
And what a cutie it is!!

Damn it Curly are you playing the toybox again!

That Purdey is a nice addition to your box, lovely game gun there....

Tinker thats a nice 16bore!

Though I can't complete with either of you guys, here's the flagship of my meger collection.

12 bore, the action and barrels were made in Liege, and then the gun itself was finished by the French artisan Seytre.

Tinker,

Keep the creatures coming. It is a very interesting thing to engrave into such a fine gun. The one's head up by the screw to the left looks kind of cool.

At the heart of it I generally like simple guns with good lines but this type of thing is just the highest form of craftsmanship. This is the stuff that transcends a gun and makes it art. The best part of this art though is it can still be used in the field.

Chasseur,

Yeah, Tammy and I were really lazy on a fine March day. We planned to go hiking, but the telephone caught us and chopped away the time. I ended up building a fire and playing "drag-out". Can't help it.

I like your Belgian/French shotgun, as you know.

So you like the top of the shottys and the bottom of the two unauthorized rifles I posted. That means you are a Purdey man!!!!

Here's the top shotty:

Purdey 12b.

Here's the bottom Purdey .500BPE:

The Woodward is a rifle. This is the "shotgun" forum.

Woodward posted only as a dispensation to Banzaibird

Figures...I finally realize I have great taste in guns but they are way out of my financial league.

Thanks for the links to the more detailed pics. I really like on the rifle haw the lock plates are seperated from the action. That is an interesting detail.

I spent some time looking around the rest of the site. There are some fantastic guns there. I like the Francotte. I really love that Woodward though.

I'd love to. However I'm afraid the most elegant things I could bring would be a Browning Broadway, an Ithaca or 2, LC Smith or an old Baker front trigger break action.

As far as DR's. The most elegant I have there is my homemade 9.3x74R on a Merkel Model 8. Not exactly elegant but about the only way I was going to afford a double for at least a few more years.

Please let me know when you guy's are getting together. I go to Norfolk quite a few times through the year (family in the Navy stationed there).
