50/90 sharps + bullet

Would a woodleigh 440gr .510" 500BPE bullet work in a 50/90 sharps? I have seen bullets advertised from .509 to .516

bonanza,
I see no reason why they would not, although I do not have a 50-90,I have shot plenty of copper out of my 45-90& 45-110,I used Speer,Remington & Hornady, from 300 gr to 500 gr.
You will get some copper in the barrel but it comes out easy enough,I am going to shoot some Barnes 450 gr in my new 1885 cal 50-110 soon as the weather improves!

Is this an origional Sharps?? If so NO WAY! The barrel steels they used back then are too soft to take many copper jackets. I've had some Ballards that were ruined (before I got them) that way.
If it's a repro.. Fire away.

Have you slugged the barerel to find out the bore and groove sizes? The 510 is standard and probably is correct for that bore.

No no, this is a brand new gun with modern bbl steel. I just need to know what is the "correct" bullet size for a 50-140.

bonanza,
.510 seems right to me as well, unless you shoot cast, then it would be .512.
In any case, you can call Skip or Cody at BUFFALO ARMS for any information that you might require for this caliber, they have always been a very good source of information & material for me!

My Shilo 50X2.5" has a bore of .512". I shot a cast sized at .515". With a 750 gr PP it is shot offhand-not the bench.
