Ritterbusch Update
      #51160 - 02/03/06 08:04 AM

Gentlemen,

As most of you know i bought a 458 Double Ritterbusch from Griffin and Howe recently.. After recieving it i put all my gained knowlege from this forum to the test an did an inspection as myself the expert.. Well things seemed good ..No movement, light gaps, etc..
After a week I said to myself you need to be sure of this so i sent it off to someone that i think you all would agree was an expert..
I have just recieved the final product of this inspection:
Barrels: soldering ,crown, stricking, chambers look good. Slight corrosion of bores on the first 6 inchs of barrels.
Action: a little play between action and barrels + - .002..
Bolting good, batteries and timing good , ejectors good, Overall good..
Forend metal: ejectors kickers and springs in good shape.
Stock and forend: Good fit, bedded, grain lined up with grip .Forend wood slightly loose..
Shooting: Good function, accuracy very good..
My only concern is the action ,barrel fit + - .002 should this be corrected with a new hinge pin at this time..
Also, the rifle will be a 450 3 1/4 when i get it back..
It is in the shop now what would you Experts have done or checked before it leaves
Thanks,
AK

The 500/450 and 450No.2 are also good choices, why 450 3 1/4, just curious.

Bonanza

I picked 450 3 1/4 because it would have made the others unnessary had it not been for the British Gov't banning all 45 cal. ammo in India and the Sudan in 1905. The ban spawned a whole host of chamberings that duplicated the 450 3 1/4. power.. The .470 Nitro being one of them.
As for the 500/450 and the 450 No.2 these are big rounds and make carrying them and the rifle a real chore in the field..
My take is if you pick any of them your going to have what is needed for what ever You come across or what ever comes at Ya'll..
My choice is the 450 3 1/4..

I recall that was a very good looking rifle. Do you know who made the action? Did Mr. R. make it himself, or does he source his actions from somewhere?

AK;
Good choice of the 3 1/4". If you are going to do
all that work to rechamber and possibly regulate, do
have it put on face if it is even faintly loose. Better
than letting the rifle hammer itself really loose.

First allow me to qualify whatever I may say with the admission that I certainly am no expert. .002" is not all that much. The proverbial bank vault has much greater tolerances. Allowing that your rifle is in the hands of an expert already, I'd trust it to his judgement. It's very possible any play may disappear after rechambering.
