Loading for .577 NE
      #51095 - 01/03/06 01:01 PM

I have found a shoty for my .577 light nitro conversion. The question I have is: who here is loading .577 currently? I have a ton of questions.

I think Marrakai has had some experience with the .577 light nitro.

He'll chime in I'm sure.

I have a 577 3" and a 577 2 3/4/750. Maybe I can help you a bit.

Marakkai et al,

The shotgun is a prewar German 12 ga. Sauer at http://www.thadscott.com/ I don't have it in hand yet, but if it measures up, I will convert it to a 577 light nitro.

1) Can one use the 3" instead of the 2 3/4"?
2) Do you cut down you 3" to make 2 3/4"?
3) Can one use a standard press (I have a lee classic)?
4) What load will keep it at or below 10 tons with a 650gr bullet?
5) If I bought the cases, powder and bullets, could someone load me up 40 for the gunmaker to use for the conversion?

Who is doing your conversion? I've got a 10ga with side clips proofed at 1200bar. I would love to do a quality light nitro conversion. Maybe we could share cost? I've got a set of 3" dies and I load on a RCBS ammo master. Since it will be regulated from scratch you can work up a load. PM me if you are intrested.

Bonanza:
You've got a few answers already, but I'll add mine anyway.

1. Yes ...but I prefer the 2 3/4 case as it is far less likely to ever be accidentally loaded with a full nitro cartridge, and it requires less wads.
2. Yes I use a Dremel with an abrasive wheel, easy.
3. Yes ...but full-length sizing dies would probably need the bigger press with the insert. With this low-pressure straight-wall cartridge though, you will only ever need to neck-size during normal shooting.
4. 90 to 95 grains Varget behind a 650gr jacketed bullet, with a filler-wad (either a big tuft of dacron/kapok, polyurethane foam, or saddle-felt to completely fill the case) should give 1650 to 1700 fps at 8 to 10 tons. Start at 90gr and work up using a chronograph to get the required velocity.
5. Can't help from this side of the big pond.

I can't find that Sauer shottie on the Thad Scott website, has it been taken down? If it is a solidly-built gun with a cross-bolt and heavy nitro-proof then it would probably be fine.

I'll take some close-up photos of mine for comparison when you blokes get a bit further down the track. Looks like there will be enough of us for a "12-bore to .577" club here on NE before too long!

bonanza

I have an RCBS Big Max. (I think ) I don't believe they are made anymore but will do a 50 BMG. I see them at gunshows now and then for around $300.00

Remember that if you just cut down 3": brass for your chamber reamer you will end up with a non standard chamber.

Are the RCBS dies 1" or 1.25"? My Lee press can take a 1.25" die.

I have CH4D dies and they are 1.25 the ammo master works great. Redding also makes an Ultramag press that is a nice press.

There are also companies out there that make adapters for different size dies in different presses. I'ma t work right now so don't have the shortcuts handy but if you do a search on the web you should be able to find them.

BB

P.S.- I'd load for you but don't have .577 dies...yet .
