16ga slugs
      #51045 - 01/03/06 12:13 AM

I'm not sure quite where this topic falls, but I have a 16x16 drilling with short chambers and I am looking for a source for rifled slugs to use in it. I found some on eBay and tried them in the old girl,, results were not spectacular, so was hoping to find another more modern source. Hoping someone out there could help.
Regards and thanks

Yes I have, but I have no idea how to load them to duplicate the original round. I can't use the shot cups, because I'm araid of bulging the barrel. Can you still buy the felt base wads. I also believe that I would have to get a role crimper I quess. Any siggestions?

Everything you might need can be had at Ballistic Products, Inc. You do need basic knowledge of cartridge loading, though. Do you have a friend nearby who can help?

Good luck,

Roll crimping is no big deal. You can buy an antique roll crimper and get good results. Ballistic Products sells roll crimpers for use in a hand drill or drill press. They work the same. I have used both.

I don't have a clue about loading slugs, though.

Here is a batch of 10ga. 2 7/8" shells I loaded for my Lindner Daly, using a Ballistics Products roll crimper. Roll crimping over a ball or slug is the same operation.

What are members opinions on using all brass cases for slugs? I understand that they can be crimped just a bit with conventional star crimping tools, and this is enough for slug loading. I don't remember where I heard this, as it was long ago.

Drillings are generally designed for Breneke slugs.
A few thoughts:
: Roll crimp formers are available from Lyman & probably Lee.
: Brass cases are of larger capacity due to thinner walls, but should allow light star or stab crimping. They may require annealing frequently depending on the amount of crimp. They are expensive. Proper size wads for brass cases may have to be made due to larger size.
: I'd try "Old West Scrounger" for 16 bore brass and Breneke slugs and wads.
:Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, I will check them out tonight when I get home and get on my home computer, can't access it from work. Brass shells would be very cool, never seen any close up. Perhaps OWS will have all that I need. I did mange to find some old Peters 2-9/16 slugs on the internet, but they didn't shoot very well about 12" at 50 yds.
Thanks to all

You'll run into problems with brass. Modern shotguns are sized to paper or plastic cases, so the inside diameter corresponds roughly to the bore diameter. A brass case is thinner, so the inside diameter of the case is larger. Your slug will rattle around in the brass case. On the other hand, if you size your slug to fit inside the brass case it will most likely be way over bore size.

Inexpensive brass cases (Magtech) are available from Huntington (12 ga. only), made for large pistol primers. They're only about $16.00 for boxes of 25. Huntington also offers a 12ga. shellholder for standard presses (about $20).

OWS closed up several months ago. They were right on my way to work every day and were convenient, to say the least. They didn't even ask me whether they could close...

Where the hell is W. Virginia...??? Too far to get there on my lunch hour, I'll bet.

Well so far I have not been able to find 16 ga brass, lots of 12,20 and 410. I did find 16 ga dangerous game slugs, but man 11.00 a pop for the lead, a little salty for me.

OK, this something for a kraut, take Magtech 16 ga brass, aneal the case mouth( its very hard) and buy a RCBS 16 ga shotshell die set.
The RCBS die have a shell holder and a die body holding all parts:resizing die, roll crimp die and other parts you dont need here. If you need wads,I recommand cicle fly fiber wads. not 16 ga. for Magtech brass, cicle fly know this problem and will send you the rigth one. Start with a roundball or another slug you have.
Look at the length so you hold the slug in the case with the roll crimp, it wan't rattle.
You can buy 16 ga brennecke slug in krautland, ask Ballistik Products if they have them in the States. If you have problems that the wad is to small for the magtech brass case, also with brennecke slug base wads, patch with a piece of paper like a muzzle loader roundball. this helps!

As CptCurl stated, you will probably have trouble with loose, in-the-case fit.
: Plastic works just fine, though.
: Some time ago,(30yrs or more) I read an article about lining oversize cases with card stock to reduce inner dimensions. this may be an option for your 16 bore brass, but there is a possiblity of some of it blocking the bore.
: When working loads up for my double 12 with slugs and round balls, I had good luck with WW AA cases.

If he uses conventional plastic hulls, they will probably be Gamebore hulls. Does this pose any particular component problems? I'd like to load some 65MM hulls with slugs, also, for the Lajot BBF.

Any help is appreciated.

I know that there are different opinions on this, but have you tried any standard 2 3/4 slugs in the drilling?
If it's up to shooting modern loads, I doubt that there would be a problem.

I have a few 16s that shoot well with them, and one drilling that won't shoot regardelss of what I put in it.
Standard length Remingtons have worked well (they are quite undersized though) and Brenekes have given mixed results. I plan on shooting them in a cape gun tomorrow that is cross firing, and hopefully the heavier slug will move things over.
All of the guns I'm currently shooting have short chambers.
I've never had a problem.
Cheers
Tom

TomH

It is an early Nitro snap action with external hammers and 65mm chambers. I loved it when I owned it, and now someone else who appreciates what it is loves it.

You are right about the 2 3/4" loads for more modern drillings, and I use original Brenneke when I can find them. The OLD original Brennekes work great in my two 12 gauge drillings and my 16 ga. I'm talking about the paper hull shells with the fiber wad screwed into the base of the slug.

At one time I could find these in 67mm, and they worked well in my older drillings and BBFs.
