Hunting Hippo/Duiker in Zambia - Newbie Questions
      #50973 - 27/02/06 07:56 PM

Hi all,

I am a newbie here, i have been searching the site and have found it full of info for those that don't ask silly questions!

I plan to hunt Bull Hippo and Blue duiker in Zambia late next year. Heaps of questions but i plan to post those as i go, what would make more sense would be to hear some opinions and stories from you guys who have/haven't and are planning to hunt africa? You know what calibre you recommend? Animal traits? Difficulting of find game?

I guess the last thing is has anyone here hunted with "PRO-HUNT ZAMBIA"?

Thanks in advace for your replies!

First of all, order "The Perfect Shot", by Robertson, and "African Hunter II", by Craig Boddington. Both of these titles are available from Safari Press:

www.safaripress.com

If you plan to hunt duiker as well as hippo on the same safari, you could use a 375 H&H or 416 of some sort on those same animals. Just use solids, and you'll be able to break down your hippo in short order, plus that same solid load won't blow up your duiker. Solids can be really practical, versatile projectiles under the right circumstances. I wouldn't use them for most of the animals you'll hunt, but on the very big, thick-skinned, dangerous stuff as well as the very small stuff, solids can't be beat........

Thanks AD,

i'll probably be looking at a double in 375HH, and if the situation provides i will resist hunting Hippo in the water, much prefer on the land . Solids sounds like a plan.

I will try and get two rifles for the trip is that a bad idea, from what i've read two is good incase the S#!T hits the fan and one is damaged

I will contact safaripress and try to get those books, is there anyone in OZ that my have those books for sale?

Yes,
Call Peter Moncrief
I think he is called BUNDUKI BOOKS
Tel 03 9898 6684

He is based in Mont Albert somewhere which is near Box Hill
but he will post them out to you.

I suggest you try to get them in Australia as AirPost costs from
the US for heavy books (which these are) is expensive.

When you load your solids drop the load 5% from your soft nose
load and work up. If you want load data for Soft and Solids for
all the Woodleigh Bullet weights, PM me sometime and I'll give you them.

Good luck

SSGA

You are certainly going to one of the largest to one of the smaller ones.

Which area of Zambia will you be hunting?

Yeah Nitro the Kasempa Lunga Luswishi game management area (6000 sq miles) and maybe the Kafue Flats and Bangweulu swamps. I am informed like our national park system; unfenced and only open for hunting 8 months of the year. But with many things you never know unless you go and see for yourself

Nope gryph no secrets just big time saving and no serious sambar hunts, just local etc. But i hope to be able to borrow a work gun at least !

The blue duiker is becoming a bit more of a hunted antelope of recent so my intended guide has informed me he will try a few techniques this season to try and help improve my chances, app. they can be called like red/fallow deer

I am grateful for all of your help

I will if it is ready to go!! However it is taking a very long time to make, i am sure a solid from that gun would be just as effective as the 375HH.

Thanks for reminding me cooch.....

By all means tell me, just that i have invited you on so many sambar hunts of late and you keep saying no, i thought if i asked about africa you'd say no as well?

Any way less than four weeks to Hog deer season......then i am on a hunting diet

In reply to:

From what one hears, it may not be as simple as it first appears.

Either one shoots it in the water, in which case all you get to see is eyes/ears/nostrils .... or one tries to ambush it while it is feeding on land, a situation in which the animals are exceedingly paranoid and prone to aggressive reactions. Like trying to kill you.

These do happen to be large, surprisingly fast, animals who kill per people per annum than any other grass-eater in Africa.

Or so I hear,,, but then hearsay is not admissable evidence, is it?

Any members of this board with experience are welcome to enlighten me.

YEP I HAVE SEEN THOSE STATS TOO

Find the water find the hippo! It surely cant be compared to walking up a Cape Buffalo all day for instance amongst a herd of watchful eyes.Personally i dont see much joy in shooting a hippo at all, maybe for villagers meat etc but not on my list of "must have" challenging game animals wish list of Kodiak browns,Argali`s and some of the other antlered game not an old river horse that one can generally find being shot any old how on some of the hunting vids....

Gryph....

How you would shoot hippo is up to you....

I'm not sure that you do well to assume that our friend here would do so in an "unsporting" manner.

I would love to take on a hippo when we go to Tanzania this summer, but sadly it appears to be beyond my pay scale. I think hunting these things on dry ground is probably among the most exciting forms of hunting available. They are big, ill tempered, fast, and you know the action will be close, and the actual target area quite small. It would be right up there with going into the willows after a wounded bear - without the snow.

Sounds like a nice trip in the planning. I had a chance to hunt Zambia twenty years ago for next to nothing (compared to now), lion, buffalo and hippo plus plains game but couldn't take up the offer due to being too poor even at next to nothing prices. Something I would do 'yesterday' if offered it today.

I would like to hunt hippo on land oneday. They are very fast beasts over a short run and can be extremely dangerous if you get in their way.

A group of us approached a waterhole in Kenya and surpised a hippo on the shore in the bush. It moved with such speed. Another time I was on a boat on the Zambezi and we watched with sick fascination as a hippo was scared out of the bush from above and came at full speed for the river, with a black fisherman directly in his path. We yelled warnings and luckily the hippo changed course a bit and missed the fisherman. He had no idea what was headed his way until it was beside him and hitting the water.

I reply to both Gryph and Cooch.....

Gryph i can take you as a stirrer, and the line was to bait me like a leopard, which is the way the big cats are usually hunted (you would not hunt this way?) Hippo i believe are like any animal on the planet, you find the right habitat and then you find them, exactly like hog deer? You know how i hunt and have hunted, it must upset you that there is no grey in my past? (I'm returning the fishing trip - like hippo meat tied to an overhanging tree......)

Cooch I understand your frustration of explanation, on a small part one of the reasons i wish to hunt the hippo is to be part of the "the are the most dangerous......." and see for myself. There will always be non-believers.

In reply to:

From an anonymous PM on another forum, some editing..

SSGA Out of curiosity, why those two species?

It'd be most unlike you to choose them just because they were "easy"....... so I suspect that you have put some thought into both the choice of species, and the way they'll be hunted.

My reply:

Hippo – Purely TROPHY hunt reasons:

1. Most dangerous mammal if not most dangerous vertebrae animal,

2. THRILL - Capstick said never stand between a hippo and his swamp which is sort what I’ll try to do without the hippo knowing it, ohh a stalk with my life on the line

3. Huge tusk and teeth show off value, open mouth skull mount maybe? (if i get one)

4. Can eat em app. one of the nicest

5. Second largest and a member of the big 6 most believe should have been a member of the big 5 replacing rhino (now)

6. The challenge of hitting a tennis ball shaped target at a 45km p/h charge is life or death, if i F#@k the stalk up.......

Blue Duiker – Pure Challenge

1. Lives in ridiculous habitat pretty much all thorns, like hunting a miniscule version of a Sambar.

2. Small target, no bigger than a hare

3. Trophy is in the taking of an animal it might take the entire 7 days, not the size of the horns

4. Can eat a whole one whilst I’m there

5. I’d like to carry a few scars, snake bites, etc. I put on/gave myself saying “I went in after a blue duiker” (proving how silly I am) rather than “this animal went after/charged me……..”

6. One of the smallest "legally" hunted "game" mammal in the world

Reply to Nitro:

Thanks nitro, i am just as economically challenged as the rest of us, more so now we got the 8 week old.... You are right thou the prices of hunting Zambia have gone throu the roof, being a safe country with very restrictive hunting controls (once again from reading) has left a very good pop of animals to hunt, if you are after LION (World Record), leopard, sable, roan or lechwe (biggest horn to body mass antelope) seems like Zambia should be a target, hahahaha. Have you heard of this reserve? The bank manager is gunna love the interest

Your understanding of wanting to hunt hippo is appreciated!!! Yes stalk between the hippo and the water, stalk is the challenge i guess, hoping for it not to charge......blue duiker - well i am crazy (most of you know that ) does anyone now the Aust CITES listing on blue duiker (i think it is classified as a forest)?

Also i'd like a Chobe bushbuck because of their beautiful chocolate coats with both white strips and spots, not over done like a zebra, more like a chital?

It is a way off but dreams are what keep us out hunting....Thanks again all you guys,

SSGA

Gryphon,

Having seen lots of hippo on land and in the water(also just meters away while in a canoe, which is actually kind of scary!), I'd say that it's not as easy as you might think. At least to shoot one in a "ethical" way. I shot a hippo on land last year, and sneaking up to one in daylight is at least as diffucult as sneaking up on any other African animal. Perhaps more, as hippo are so paranoid, and flee for water if they just think something isn't quite right. And a hippo caught on land with you in the way will definatly try to chomp on you while running for the water.
