Vegas Show

Ok gentlepeople, it's now the Monday following the firearms show in Vegas that I've been reading about.

Anyone have any updates/photos??????

All of us kids are DYING to hear what you saw, what you BOUGHT, what floored you, what made you vomit, how the dinner was, etc.

I hope all who attended had a great time and am looking forward to the reports.

lots of nice stuff,

I saw a nice clamshell 600 nitro, that I would like to have. Lots of nice doubles (both rifles and shotguns)

Oh by the way their was a nice "no name british" 4 bore there for 35,000. It was about 35lbs, and in nice shape.

Lots of stuff I will go again, that was my first time.

One of my favorites was a Holland & Holland 240 Flanged for $13.9K. There was also a daly/Sauer drilling in 12x12x38-55 but it was double in price what it should hve been. There was a collection of 11 8 bores with some encrusted in gold. I traded for a High Standard Trophy Military 107 like I used on the college team in mint shape and a sweet 20 ga pre-1913 LC Smith. Sales were excellent for me and had a great show even on set-up day.

The dinner was great with 11 of 12 showing. Company and food was great. Some of our number bought some neat guns at the show. I'll let them talk as I am bushed after the 16 hr drive back home.

More later.

I picked up a Daley/Sauer drilling "Made In Prussia" in 12/12/30-30...sidelock, side cock in their standard grade with sparse engraving. It is a decent drilling. The stock is nice French, but short and had spacers added...$1,425.00 for a very good shooter. The right barrel throws an original Brenneke slug 2 1/2" at three o'clock at 60 yards. Has a folding tang peep, also.

First off, the dinner was a good time, and all who were there are good people. It was a pleasure to put a face to a name.

I spent most of my time at the show hanging with CaptCurl, and he helped explain the differences in the doubles we looked at, as well as what to look for when checking to see if the gun is pooched. I really learned a lot, thanks Roscoe, and thanks for organizing the dinner. Thanks John for your shout. I wanted to get to the shot show but ran out of time; one more day would have been perfect.

I went down looking for a clamshell in 9.3x74, but did not find one. I was tempted by two rifles: 1. An I. Hollis overlever hammer gun in 400/360 that would have cleaned up all right and had been imported from India the week before; 2. A hammerless german 9.3x74 in nice shape, in the case with clawmount scope, and instead of the single dolls head in the middle, had two whatchamacallits (I still have a lot to learn). I got the opinion of CaptCurl, 500Nitro, Mickey's friend Chris, my father, and I even tried Mick on his cell phone. I finally decided to wait and purchase what I want instead of settling (if you know of one for sale PM me).

Rifles ranged from $3500-$45,000. It was amazing how much more gun you could get for $7500-$8000, as well as selection, when compared to doubles for $6000-$6500. I would say about 15% of the double rifles were off face.

At the show I remember seeing a couple of percussions, a 4 bore, 8 bore, 12 bore, 600 NE on a clamshell ($45,000), 500 Nitro ( a cased Frasier in excellent condition $30,000), 500 EX (another I. Hollis overlever hammer gun from India for $3500. It was well worn on the outside but was still on face), a couple of 470's (a hammered Manton on a Jones underlever $11,000), 450 (Army&Navy but was off face), 43 Mauser (on a Sauer? for $8500), 405 Win, 450/400 3 1/4" (a Rigby nice and original for $7900), 400 Purdey (a cased Purdey of course for $42,000), a couple of 9.3x74R, 318 WR, a couple of 8mm's with both bore sizes, a couple of 303's, a 375/303, 300H&H, 7x65R, and a 6.5x58R. I'm sure I have forgotten some but it was sensory overload.

It was a good time and a good show. I think I will be there next year.

It may be...after a few seasons afield...I took it out today on some game farm chucker and pheasants and didn't miss...at all! I think maybe you shouldn't hold your breath waiting.

I'll try to post a couple of pix soon.

Dear forum members,

My wife and I just got back late last night (Monday) so please excuse the delayed report.

The dinner was great and went off without a hitch. We assembled at the appointed hour, with eleven out of twelve in attendance. The only one absent was Butch Searcy, who had something to keep him from Las Vegas altogether. We drank Australian wine selected by Adam Tayler and 500Nitro. Surprisingly, nobody got tanked!

Our good member Nigel Minton (500Nitro) sat across the table from me. Here's a pic of 500Nitro (on the right, in profile) talking to Bob Mason, with Bob's wife, Sharon behind.

Our other good-will ambassador from Australia, Matt Graham, sat to my right. Here is a likeness of his glowing countenance:

Adam Tayler sat to my left. Here's a pic of our good Canadian buddy:

We had the pleasure of three ladies among us, which probably helped us maintain our resolve. I've already presented Sharon Mason. Here's a pic of Jen Tayler (close) and my better half, Tammy Stephenson (behind):

Across the table and to my right sat Dan Lang (retex) and his brother-in-law, Jimmy Hogge, on the right, both of Houston, Texas:

Directly across the table sat my new friend Pete Hiatt (peterb). For some reason, I didn't snap his photo, or else it didn't turn out. I thought I got the whole table. Sorry, Pete.

My pic is not there, either. I haven't mastered the art of shooting myself.

The server took several group shots of the whole table using Nigel's camera. Pete and I will have to wait for our shining faces to appear when the group shot is posted.

The food and service at William B's was just fine, as usual. The tab came to $60 per head. That's not bad for what we ate and drank. We all had a great time and left as good friends. Let's do it again next year!

Next report will be about the gun show.

Best to all,
Curl

Got back yesterday morning.

Great to catch up with you all at the dinner.

I had a great time and it was good to put faces to names.

I was too busy working at the Shot Show to get to the Arms show
but maybe next time, however since I wasn't buying it was probably
a good idea not to go !!!

That 400 Purdey sounded a good buy - original 400's are quite rare and
especially in the condition described.

Will email photos of the dinner to Curl in the next day or so
once they are downloaded.

I will be over for the 2008 Shot Show in Vegas so maybe we can do
it all again sometime.

Good to meet you all.

The Galazan RBL is a superb little 20 Ga. Right now there is about an 18-24 month backorder for good reasons. It looks good with "engraving" that looks like the real thing...not that rolled on stuff. The look is good and the feel is also good. It has a lot of special features available and the price will really kill Ruger sales. There was one finished gun at the show and two more in the white. I will probably order one. I just wish I could use my own wood and have it in 20 Ga magnum.

One very odd but curiously attractive double was shown by Jim Goergen, $6995. French, 8mm Lebel, 30" barrels, safety lever on the left side of the sidelock action, straight grip. Quite well made and finished and in nice condition.

Hope I'm not intruding. Just found this cite and think I'm home. Forgive me for not being too computer literate. I purchased that Rigby 450-400 3 1/4 from the show. It is a beautiful untouched gun. Had just purchased it's twin brother, 450 Nitro Cordite hammer underlever two months before. My only double rifles to date. God's been kind to me. Think I'm hooked. Had missed a great Lancaster 450 3 1/4 BPE on the table behind ours. Joe Hepsworth beat me to it. Love this forum.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the Rigby. Maybe you can find someone to help you post pictures of that beauty. Have you shot it yet? I remember it came with loaded ammo and dies, but I would not trust anyone else's load. Keep us informed.

Clark:
The BP Rigby is tight, perfect bores, no buggered screws, and, with those 28 inch barrels, handles like a best 12 bore. I have not shot it yet but I am preparing to cast some 40 caliber pp projectiles out of an adjustable pp mould this weekend. It is my understanding that the 450-400 BP load was 255 grain bullet behind 110 grains black. I shoot black powder silouhette and schutzen for the last 15 years so I have experience loading black. If this load is not appropriate to my rifle I would appreciate input. The barrel flats tell me 400ex and it is also marked "Class D" It is also marked "Class D" on the rib right after Jn. Rigby, London. Do you have any idea what this means. Will have some pictures soon. Jeff at Rigby has my 450 cordite as he wanted to look at it and is putting on a gold bead front along with two extra strikers. Also sealing the mortises and tightening the screws. A really nice guy.
Adam:
You are correct that the rifle came with 20 rounds of loaded ammo and dies. I will be pulling those 400 gain projectiles and dumping the powder this weekend. A friend just gave me 100 new Kynoch cases with two sealed boxes of 400 grain projectiles and 2000 Berdan primers (non-mecuric) for this case. I also received 15 rounds of cordite 450-400 with this group. I will save the projectiles and loaded rounds for when I purchase a cordite 450-400. I'm just having too much fun. My 450 3 1/4 cordite rifle is a honey. My friend sold me 75 rounds of original non-mecuric primed Kynoch ammo (both solids and softs) along with a plethora of brass and unopened Kynoch boxes of 480 grain projectiles. I took it to the range, having never fired a DR expecting some heavy recoil. Man, what a blast. I fired 14 rounds standing at a makeshift rest and my last two rounds were 1 inch apart horizontal. Most rounds were hitting 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches but I needed a solid rest todo better. The recoil was just a big push. I had more recoil from my 20 gauge. I'm hooked, sorry for the diatribe as I am not usually this noisy but no one to talk to here. Did have Superior make up 10 solids/10 softs to try out. Will let you know the results. Mike

Mike,

Congratulations on your buy. I looked that Rigby over at Vegas and tried to talk Adam Tayler into buying it. It should be a fine shooter. Keep to the black powder or nitro-for-black loads, though.

Still waiting for 500Nitro to send me the group photos. He's been down with the flu but says they will be coming soon. I hope he feels better now. I asked if he got into something at Las Vegas, but he assured me he didn't. Just the plain old Oz flu.

In the meantime, here are two shots I took from my hotel window at sunset on Sunday evening, Feb 12.

The first is a shot of the Las Vegas strip coming alive, looking north from my room:

The second is a shot looking east down Tropicana Avenue at the full moon rising above the desert:

These images ought to get you in the mood for Las Vegas next January.

Group shot coming soon! Get well, 500Nitro!

Will email the photos today.

THe Shot Show is in Orlando, Florida next year and
then back in Las Vegas from 2008 onwards - hopefully
permanently which means it should hopefully coincide
with Beinfield's show which will be good.
