Double of the Day - Ingram Glasgow 500 BPE

Ingram Glasgow .500 BPE

.500 Black Powder Express from approximately 1875 - 1886. Hammers, full scroll engraving, bar action locks and stalking safeties, damascus 28" barrels. Rear sights three folding and one standing and engraved matted rib with "Chas Ingram Glasgow". Heel and toe plates and horn grip cap and forend tip.

What a great rifle for scrub hunting of pigs and deer.

A beautiful old rifle made by a good maker Charles Ingram, of Glasgow, Scotland! I love these old war horses, and if they could only talk.........

That is quite the wide top lever, do you know if it's typical of the subject maker?

Bushman, I don't know if that lever is typical of that maker, though I've seen several with the wide lever. I believe the width of the lever is a safety item. When the hammers are all the way back, the rifle cannot be opened because the lever hits the right hammer. It doesn't effect the left hammer, so that the right barrel can be re-loaded while the left hammer is still cocked. This lets the rifle be slammed shut in case the re-load is not completed before the left barrel is needed.

You understand this is only my opinion, and I have no writen documentation to prove that theory!
